  • This Week in Shocker History

Not sure if everyone has signed up for Sully's e-mail Shocker Report. I enjoy his look back into Shocker history that is included. This week:

Warren Armstrong registered one of his four triple doubles on Jan. 13, 1968 against Memphis State. He scored 29 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and handed out 12 assists. The Shockers beat the Tigers 77-69 in Wichita. Armstrong also had double figures in three categories against Southern Illinois (18-12-10) in 1965, Arizona State (33-21-12) in 1967 and Loyola of Chicago (19-19-12) in 1968.
IMHO Warren should be in the rafters with Ralph, Cleo, Dave, Antoine and Cliff.

I believe the criteria is to have been an All-American in order to hang from the rafters. Until that changes, Armstrong isn't going to be there.

If I was picking a team from among Shocker greats my first 3 choices would be Dave, X and Warren.

Dave would be my clear No. 1. X and Warren I consider a tie for 2nd.

It is difficult to compare All-American credentials from era to era, but if we want our best players represented in the rafters then Warren definitely belongs up there with Cleo, Dave, Antoine, Cliff and X (in my opinion) regardless of the All-American criteria. Warren deserves an exception.

However, I agree with Sub. Warren is not going to be there until the criteria changes and I don't see that happening.

Cliff was a third team All-American by Basketball Times (which did not exist during Warren's playing days).

There ya go. All players should have had the same criteria opportunity. If a 3rd team was not available during Warren's years, then Cliff shouldn't have gotten in if it wasn't available for other era players or you loosen the criteria for the earlier players.

Could the criteria have been set in a time when we were under the impression that WU or WSU was likely to occasionally have an All American BB player?

Perhaps the criteria needs to be re-looked?

Just saying, it has been a long spell since the last one and we got our last three over a very short span of years, and none since.

You risk cheapening what is achieved. Not all of the good players are going to end up in the rafters.

I don't disagree, Sub, but the college basketball landscape has changed greatly since the early 80's. Not saying it will never happen again, but what do you think the odds are, based on WSU's current conference and general college basketball team potential among all DI colleges? And if we did have such a player, is he likely a 1 or 2 and done player? Doesn't that also cheapen the accomplishments of earlier Shocker greats?

In my view, Warren wasn't just another good player. He was one of our few really great players. I agree that this group needs to be very select. The addition of Warren would not detract in any way, shape or form from the level of player currently represented. In fact, it would enhance it.
