I wonder why coach doesn't think so.

You will have to take that up with the coach then. I'm afraid I can't answer for him. I'd like to know though... it is one of the million dollar questions after the ugly loss last night. Hell let's face it... coach left us all with a LOT of questions the other night.

I still think Garrett's biggest problem defensively is our guards can't keep anybody in front of them and he's forced to try and help a lot more than he should have to. At least he tries to help. I don't know how many times I've seen urley just stand and watch.

Yea, Stutz sticks his arms in the air as though he has been robbed, but it doesn't escape fouls every time.

If Durley & Stutz played 1-one-1 on the low post only, Durley would win 9 out of 10 times. As bad, many times, as Durley's defense is...it is due to laziness not athletic ability. Stutz is just too slow of foot...he can't change that. Durley would kill Stutz, not even a fair fight.

I don't have ESP or anything but my guess is coach knows this as well.

Bingo! It almost seems like they let their man drive by at times thinking that they have help waiting in the lane. It's good to play help defense but we shouldn't rely on it because it creates mismatches and easy baskets a lot of times.

I still wonder if we don't guard too closely too far out on the perimiter. Do we need to be in a guys shorts who is 5 feet behind the 3 point line? That just stretches out our defense and gives him more room to maneuver into the paint. Seems like it would make the job of stopping dribble penetration more difficult. Anyone?

Also on the help defense (or lack thereof) by Durley, I've noticed the same thing from Aaron Ellis at times. It's like he doesn't see the player driving into the lane until he's 3 steps from the rim. Gotta keep an eye on your man and the ball!

Speaking of Ellis, I wish he would use his length to contest shots rather than leaving his feet, especially 15-20 ft from the basket. The guy has the wingspan of a pterodactyl, he doesn't really need to jump to contest every shot or pump fake.

My general guess is that our littles don't "let" players drive because they think there is help. Give our littles some IQ credit. They know better than us that neither Garrett or Durley are defensive marvels. Garrett is maybe not as obviously bad as Durley on D, but in the same area code.

I also think overall our guards have done a better job this year of not letting other teams' PG just abuse us (don't fire back with Kemba references...he abuses everybody) by driving into the paint.

Plus, when Garrett does help, the rest of the rotation sucks. I'm sick of hearing people behind me complain about Garrett's man scoring when he helps off on someone who's beaten their man and nobody else is rotating to cover. And if he doesn't help he's criricized for that too.

Our team defense isn't very good I guess. Not when things get inside.

Well of course I know they aren't letting them drive by into the lane, it just feels like that given how easy they penetrate at times.

That being said I agree that we've improved at defending the dribble penetration as the year has progressed. Hopefully that continues because as MSU showed at times, it's still one of our weak points on D.
