  • NEXT game

Okay. I think we have disected the SDSU game as much as we can. Think it's time to talk about our NEXT game. Some seem to want to leapfrog over it to talk about Tulsa and LSU, and it makes me wonder if SN posters feel that Nicholls State is an absolute hands down win. Nicholls State has a better rpi (32) than we do (56) and the games people seem to think are going to save our season are LSU (165) and Tulsa (95).

Nicholls State beat LSU by 9; LSU lost to Memphis by 9. A little birdie told me Nicholls State is better than most are giving them credit for. I for one certainly hope the team is ready for them.

As for Alabama A&M, I certainly hope a SWAC team with an rpi of 341 is no threat.

Being at home helps a bunch, but you're right. We can't afford to overlook anyone this season. From Evansville to Nicholls State.

NSU also beat Houston, but lost by a bunch at Oklahoma State. They have two players that score about two thirds of their points. NSU plays Wednesday night at home. Not a gimme, but at least we have all week to prepare for them.

According to their roster on espn, their tallest player is 6'6", and they don't shoot it from deep very well (33% as a team). If I remember right, when reading articles about their game against LSU, they run the Princeton offense so hopefully our preseason scrimmage against Denver prepared us to face that.

Could prove to be some interesting match ups. The only 3 on their roster listed as F (no C), don't play much. Everyone else is listed as G-F or G. 6'6" Bose and 6'5" Hunter provide nearly 2/3s of their scoring (27.4 and 15.63). 5'11" Franklin is their PG who has 27 assists and only 7 TO in 5 games and 33 minutes pg. The other main 4 players are all 6'3" or less.

Bose also leads in rebounds and shoots the most (and best %) 3s. He also draws a boat load of fouls. In 5 games he's 43-49. It will be interesting who guards him. It should be interesting watching our bigs, guard players 6'5" and under. This may be a game we go small. Blair/Ellis, Smith/Murry, Hatch, Kyles, and Rags.

Seriously folks? we now have to worry about NSU? I respect their game, but really though, we win this by 23. We haven't fallen into the doldrums of D1 college basketball yet and a team like NSU has no business beating us. The two programs are as day and night as far as I'm concerned and the thought of this being a trap game or a potential loss is just nonsense. RPI's this early in the season is irrelevant as well.

OK, thanks. I guess the discussion is over.

That's what we thought about Evansville last year.

Seriously, I'm in the camp that thinks you have to respect every team you play no matter what the jersey says. It's been said multiple times (by ShocksMVC, I believe) that as long as we avoid bad losses we still have a shot at an at large bid (assuming we don't win the MVC tourney, which I really believe we will). Virginia beat Virginia Tech on Sunday so that win keeps getting better. It looks like a down year for the ACC so who knows where they will end up in that conference but it looks like they'll be closer to the top than bottom.

So, should we beat Nicholls State by 20 at home? Yes. Should we automatically assume that we will? No.

We are 7 games into a very promising season and we have two tough losses to a couple of teams I believe are top 15 in the country which, even though we lost, will benefit us so much down the stretch as long as the guys stay positive, learn from each game, and continue to get better. We've shown that when we play smart basketball (protect the ball, defend every possession, rebound) we can play with any team in the country. We need to keep getting better and learn to avoid the type of mental lapses that cost us in our two losses.

We will be more than a handful by the end of the season.

I read earlier this year on ESPN that Bose is expected to be an NBA guy.

And do you feel we learned from the UConn game and got better before we played San Diego? How do you feel now?

BTW, what is Nicholls State RPI?

RealTimeRPI has them at 27 and us at 55. I don't know what the others have them or us at.

You know what, I'm so happy that it is not a month ago, and we have some real basketball games to talk about.

Sorry for the digression, you may continue.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.
