That's the distinguishing factor in my eyes.
It was an administrative error. Nobody was trying to cheat. Fine WSU's Athletic Department. They were the ones responsible, not Clev or the team.

As for Newton, I find it hard to believe he didn't know anything.
WSU Athletic Department = WSU = Team.

Or if you do tell your kid make sure that he is well-versed in the Sgt. Schultz defense.

Gets quoted a lot here, but always appropriate.

the NCAA was able to verify that he kept meticulous records demonstrating that he knew nothing about the money his dad was getting.

                      Agreed
Or, Cam Newton's father sold his son into labor. He was paid for his son's efforts while the son evidently received none of this benefit. Isn't this sound a little like slave labor? I didn't think that was still an accepted practice in the south.

As for the WSU Administration mishap = team punishment = Clev sitting out, that is some BS. Have the coach sit. Make them pay $$$. That was punishing the player plain and simple.

But as I said in the OP, that is just the example that comes to mind. Many have pointed out the Dillon Baxter incident. However there are gobs and gobs of other incidents.

Also in my OP I made the distinction that it was Auburn who suspended Cam and then the NCAA reversed it.

It is not uncommon for schools to work with the NCAA to issue "self" punishments.

If Auburn truly thought that Cam should be suspended and that it would stick, why would they not announce it? They didn't announce it because they knew in 24 hours, it would be undone and they didn't want a 24 hour news cycle on how SC was going to destroy them with out Cam. Yes, all of that is speculation but come up with a better line of reasoning.
