The "official" colors are Black & Yellow.

Yes, the fight song has Gold in it. Mainly because nothing rhymes with Yellow (I am guessing) and because it flows with the song.

No doubt the rhyming issue is a major factor especially for marketing and fund raising. The Bold Gold Club just sounds better than the Yellow Fellows Club.

Agreed. They market either of the two colors (Yellow and Gold) on different occasions.
