  • Some Changes Coming to the Maui Invitational

Looks like they will be expanding the tournament to 12 teams and 23 games with 11 of those games being played on the mainland beginning next year.

Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

I read that too.....so now you get 6 games played for the price of one?

    That doesn't seem quite right.....

I am not sure I totally understand how the opening round games and the regional games will work, but this would be a good way for the Shocks to upgrade their schedule even if they were only one of the 4 mainland teams every now and then and did not go to Hawaii.

Opening round games: 7 games between 7 Maui bound teams and 4 mainland teams. Trying figure that one out.

Regional games: 4 games between the 4 mainland teams. That's easier to understand. Not sure if the second two games will be winner vs winner and loser vs loser of the 1st pair of regional games or if those will be pre-determined.

Championship round: Essentially what they have in place now.

Looks like Memphis is the Non-BCS school heading to Maui next year.

The four mainland schools have not been announced.

It's going to be a mix of the CBE we had last year and this one.

If it was that way this year. The 7 mainland teams going to Maui would have been - Wichita State, Washington, U Conn, Kentucky, OU, UVA, and MSU. The 8th team in the Maui bracket is Chaminade. The Maui portion will be the same as this year.

Prior to Maui those 7 teams will play one game against teams A, B, C, or D at home. The 4 teams A, B, C and D will play each other in a mini Tourny at one of there schools courts.

So A, B, C and D get 4 games. Two against Maui Teams and two against each other.

The Maui teams get 4 games 1 against A, B, C or D and 3 against Maui Teams.

EDIT. one of the teams A, B, C, or D only get 3 games. Chaminade does not play any of those teams.

Not sure A, B, C and D will all get 4 games. If they each got two against Maui teams that would be 8 games. If they play 4 games against each other in the regional round would make a total of 12 games on the mainland. The press release says there will be 11 games on the mainland. So looks like one of the mainland teams will only have 1 game against the Maui bound teams.

          What am I missing?

          Edit: I see your edit.

I wonder if they will do this similar to the CBE and pick 4 relatively weak teams as fodder for the Maui bound teams. That will be interesting to see.

Unless you are Iowa. Then they wouldn't be fodder.

That's true. Always better to be the foddee than the fodder. However, we all know who the CBE organizers thought would be the fodder when the set the tournament up.

Sounds like a nightmare for any team or fanbase to make reservations to follow their team.

The 7 teams going to Maui have already been pre-determined and selected. Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennesee and UCLA know they are going to Maui in 2011.

The 4 Mainland teams are simply playing home or away games that will be on their preseason schedules.
