  • The Those in Attendance Thread

I am hoping those that were personally there will comment here. I doubt that I have much ability to think rationally at this point, so I am giving this a shot.

    Thanks guys.

What did it look like live and in color?

Also, was Gregg on the radio after the game?

I haven't seen the box score, but I remember too many turnovers and missed bunny shots, especially in the first half. No good produced by our 7 ft's, ......any improvement in any of these 3 areas, and we would have won the game.

    MaiTai time!

It's a small gym and almost all of the seats were good. We had a great crowd. How did we sound on tv?

WSU fans owned the gym. Sounded great.

          Wow, what a frustrating game.

First off, props to all of the Shocker fans in attendance. We were loud and we outnumbered the UConn fans by far.

In my opinion, we lost this game with our first half performance with Walker on the bench. We didn't play well in the first half when we had the chance to build the lead.

In the second half I thought our offense was great other than the unforced turnovers. Our defense, not so much. We have to figure out how to slow down the dribble penetration. It's something that has bothered me for the past few years.

We did get jobbed on a few calls. There was an obvious goaltending call in the first half, the block call on Durley that should have been Walker's 4th foul, the phantom foul on Blair and then there was the moving screen on Stutz with a minute left. However, we wouldn't have been in that position if we would have played a better first half.

I'm dissapointed because I think we are a better team than UConn and I think we would win 7 out of 10 games against them. Their stud had a great game and you have to tip your hat to their freshman in the first half who actually had their team up 1 at half with their star on the bench for 15 minutes.

I'm over it now, time to go to the beach and down several bottles of liquid medication. Go Shox!!!!

Ok, KC. We get it. We're not necessarily blaming them solely for the loss. But you have yet to give your opinion on the officiating. I asked but you ignored it.

Please give me your opinion on the officiating. It is a vital part of the game.

Sure. We had some calls that were total BS. But that's going to happen in any game. I predicted that Kemba and his interior penetration would give us fits and get us into foul trouble as a key to the game. Once he saw we could not stop any inside penetration and we were not doubling him up, he took of advantage of that and fouls are going to be made. If this team ever learns to play defense to stop dribble drives, then less fouls will be called.

Some officiating gaffs were called during some momentum swings in the game but when you are up by 9 and trying to close the game out, you don't make unforced turnovers. Don't tell me when 7 or so turnovers with time running down didn't make you cringe more than some bad calls?

Of course officiating had an impact on the game.

Otherwise, let's just not have any refs.

Refs always have and always will miss calls.

What is frustrating is when they dictate too much of the flow of the game, which I think they did today.

The free throw discrepency is hard to reconcile.

Please excuse KC, he hasn't been in touch with reality much lately....he's been busy defending Obama, Pelosi & Reid.

Speaking of corruption perhaps he has more recent experience defending it with Charlie Rangel!

I thought we looked pretty good. As already noted not pulling away in thhe first half really hurt. Our front court was hyped but Murry and Kyles are making a very good back court. It appeared there were bad calls but that happens. The imbalance in fouls was frustrating.

I expect our frontcourt will do well in Valley play but will have to step it up in the dance. Yes I do expect us to make it.

I'm glad we fans sounded good. Being part of a live Shocker crowd for the first time in years was real treat.

I am of the mindset that we didn't overcome everything we needed to overcome, to win. Whatever that is...and whoever was responsible for it, not withstanding. I also, from my years of coaching never allowed a team to gripe about it, unless we controlled everything we could!

With that being said, bet your a$$ I would have a chip on my shoulder and my team would have a chip on their collective shoulders to make a statement the next time out, and particularly against a big name.

I probably also would have decided to leave a bruise on Kemba Walker if I though I was going to get called for thinking about guarding him. If I were HCGM I'm sure I would have tried to junk it up or something with a box and 1 or triangle & 2.

Sitting on my couch at home watching I can say that the fans for WSU in attendance were OUTSTANDING! It's so awesome to see yellow like that and hear the cheering for our guys. I wish I could be there with you, but instead, I'll just say thanks for supporting them. I hope everyone plans on making Chaminade know exactly what it means to have fan support. Koch Arena West!

After taking a few hours to stew a bit over the big disappointment (and it will be that even at the end of the season regardless of how it turns out) I think we still have so much to be happy about moving forward. We can't get that one back, and it hurts, but I think it was clear that we will be a HUGE handful for any team we play. I agree with everyone on improving dribble penetration. We're going to have to do better on that. I thought we were better at it last season--especially late in the Valley schedule, but obviously it's not good enough yet.

Toure and David Kyles were pretty impressive, as was JT coming off the bench. Aaron Ellis also defended very well and I think Ragland and DW are getting better. Garrett looked a bit like the Garrett of old, but that again will change as the season goes on--he needs a 'confidence' game and then he's off and running as we saw when he played so well against Iowa. Gabe was GREAT too I thought (that dunk he had deadens the pain slightly of the loss)

We need to win the next 2. No let downs--just plow ahead and look forward to seeing the team mature. We WILL NOT be blown out this year--I can guarantee that. I'm also confident we'll find a way to make the dance.

EDIT... I forgot to mention I thought Graham was an absolute WARRIOR out there. I think he would make an excellent Navy SEAL if indeed that's his goal!

Thanks again to the great fans in attendance!

I thought those of us in attendence witnessed a great game. Exciting from start to finish. Calhoun definitely influenced the officials. However, our turnovers down the stretch did us in. Everyone played well except for Demetric and Garrett. They struggled a little bit. Crowd was great, just not enough to will the team to a win.

I have to say that Doc and I saw the same game. I felt like the Shox had every opportunity to put the game away in the 1st half. They could have been up by 15, but instead let UConn go up by 1 at the end. Then, in the 2nd half when they played well on offense, they couldn't stop the Huskies.

When the Shox had a 9 pt lead and the ball, I felt it was essential that they score and get the double digit lead. They did not and it turned into a 7 point lead. I told my buddy at that moment that I was really worried that their failure to extend the lead to double digits would really fire UConn up and sure enough, it seemed to happen just that way. Or at least it fired Walker up.

The poor ball handling off the bench the 1st half not only kept the score close, but also affected the 2nd half. Coach felt he needed to keep Murry and Kyles in constantly to take care of the ball in the 2nd half. In the head and humidity of that gym, it could have helped to get a little breather now and then.

Yes, the officials did what I considered a very poor job and it probably favored our opponents, but not enough to overcome. We had a few calls that seemed to go our way and a few more calls that went their way. The goaltending call, the 5 step travel under their basket that was not called and a foul each on Durley, Blair, Stutz, and Hatch all hurt. However, if the team had taken care of the ball better, especially in the 1st half, and not fouled so much on good foul calls, they could have won the game by double figures.

The guard play will improve. Joe and Demetric will both improve. Also, Garret had a rough game. The way the game was called worked against him yesterday. He has not hit his stride yet, but remember St Louis last year and do not get discouraged. He'll be fine.

I say one poster somewhere say that Joe was much better than Demetric. I certainly did not see that. Joe had major problems yesterday both on offense and defense. But, like I said, he'll develop. The season is very early.

Hang in there folks. We made it to the Maui Brewing Company last night and felt much better.
