  • I am going to try and make this my last comment on this game.

I "scouted" the game last night.

Other than a pure luck banked 3, and a very short UCONN run early in the second half, and the last 3:33, WSU controlled the game.

You cannot measure the importance of the (no) charge call against Walker. It ENDS the game if the son of a ***** makes the right call, period.

Gabe's block MAY have ended the game. UCONN was reeling at that point. They were out of control and more mistakes were on the way. The chance our lead was going to 15-20 were about 3-1 in our favor.

I don't know this, but I'd be willing to wager any appendage that Gregg, at some point deep in the second half, told the guys to stop fouling, hence the ease of some of Walker's baskets, exacerbated by the fact that when he was stopped a couple of times, we were called for a foul.

What was a foul on one end of the court, ceased to be a foul on the other end with about 7 minutes to go. Sure, they rewarded the aggressive team, but in numbers that a sane person cannot make right. Almost every one of our layups in the second half were met with contact that was a foul at the other end. Gregg responded by telling his guys not to foul (in my assessment) which made baskets very easy for UCONN because we stopped defending....it is tough to defend without fouling in a game like that against players like that.

Yes we have to take better care of the ball (even when being fouled) and yes we have to find a way to win when we are the better team and overcome adversity. I get that.....but sometimes frustration wins the day when you can't get a fair shake.

PS Let me add it warms my heart to see guys like KC, shockerfammes, William and a few others RIGHT THERE WITH ALL OF US when things are done, just to keep us crazy fans in line. It must be a hard, cold night to fight through the losses the way you guys do and never enjoy the good times....you guys deserve a purple heart!

    • Sorry, one more.

If Toure' is going to play the point, and I have no problem with that, then Joe and or Demetric are going to have to step up and provide some rest for him, not worry about making the big play, and do their job. Play defense and take care of the ball, period.

Lastly, I am SICK of guys like Roscoe P Coltrane or whatever the hell his name was for UCONN (the CONN part is appropriate by the way). You bank in a 3 you stupid SOB and you smirk and walk away and high five your teammates and thank the Lord you're that lucky....you DON'T pound your chest like you just singlehandedly cured cancer.

SICK of that crap, no matter who does it. You did your job, shut your mouth and play D. That goes for you JT as well.

      • Here's the deal. I watched the game again, rewound some crucial plays and foul calls and actually thought the game was officiated pretty good until about 14:23 left in the 2nd half and the silly blocking call on a fully set JT as Walker steam-rolled into him. About 2 minutes later, Walker grabbed a Shockers arm and the ball for a steal and a score. That accounts for 5 fouls and an exit for Walker? Or not!!! Then there was the reversal call, followed immediatly by the perfect block by Gabe Blair(according to the commentators and FSF) on a Walker shot. Then Coach Calhoun said something like he thought his squad outwilled us a the end? Pla-eeese!!! My Aunt Gertrude used to say "FSF, never look a gift-horse in the mouth." Thus, Mr. Calhoun could have said "My players willed to make the myriads of charity offering gifts down the stetch which sealed the deal."

On the other hand, there were things we have to shore up as well and that is OUR responsibility. We keep allowing dribble penetration with lackluster help defense that is a day late and a dollar short. We keep making more turnovers than our opponents. Why are we not drawing more fouls? We need to get Mr. Stutz zoned into our offense with him fouling less on defense and far less illegal screens. We had a lead in both halves only to squander the lead at the end of both halves. It hurts to lead a game for 36 minutes, give 1 opponent more throws than our whole team receives, and then lose the game. The commentators noticed some bad calls against us but wondered why we we did not focus on ball denial better to Mr. Walker.

On the brighter side, I like the performances of JT, Kyles, Toure', Hatch and Gabe yesterday. The Shocks out-rebounded a team that will win many rebounding battles. We had several assists versus a team knowned to play a stingy defense. We made some big shots, and now better understand that adversity is bound to happen, usually does happen, and it happened. What can we do with utilizing our strengths to better prepare ourselves to win these close away games that plagued us last Season? We are an experienced ladened team now that is Expected to produce. Thus, We can all learn from this tough and expensive loss and make the needed adjustments to keep these setbacks to a very mild roar.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

          • KC

Johnnie, you mean KC likes the lefties? Gee, what a surprise -- I never read the political threads, but somehow that seems spot on.

But anyway, even though some bad calls are worse than others (e.g., the bogus block on Durley against Walker that would have given Superman four fouls), the fact remains that WSU hadn't exactly dominated when Walker was out. Remember who was ahead at halftime, albeit on the lucky three. So there's no guarantee that Connecticut would have folded without him for a while in the second half either.

Yes, the refs stunk at some crucial times. But the real key is that WSU had the game in hand and didn't finish the job. That's disappointing, and a missed opportunity. I hope WSU meets the Huskies in an NCAA game, because next time I believe they'd take care of business. And if Connecticut reaches the tournament, I have a hunch they'd rather see someone other than WSU opposite them in the bracket.

                • They can join everyone else and wrap their lips around Walkers balls. I will now go back to not giving a damn about UCon. They can enjoy their medicore season and NIT trip.

You forgot one: scoreboard - the one that matters.

It is time to move forward. There were valuable lessons learned, IMO.
