  • I can't figure out why in the world we wouldn't give EO a chance today....because Garrett was of no help whatsoever. At least he would have had the speed and athleticism to compete-possibly alter shots on the drive. I really thought our defense was piss pour. We. Scored enough to win today......need to lock down and stop penetration somehow. And also contest shots would have been a novel idea too. Very frustrating indeed.......but not a season breaker. We need to get some things fixed.....and we should have a great year.

    • When we went to the sweet 16, we lost an early season tournament to Illinois, and if I recall, we made a close to half court shot at the end, but it was a split second too late to count. I also recall going and getting clobbered by Michigan State at their place.

Just playing the competition helps. It sucks, but feeling a sting like this does have some benefit, if we can again use it as a motivating and learning experience.

I really really wanted to win this game, just for the fact that we would get 2 more quality games out of this thing, as opposed to now getting to play Chaminade, and probably OU. I would have liked to have our guys play another Tom Izzo team.

      • I thought we should've tried out EO for a few minutes. Put him inside and let him swat a few shots into the seats. At least it might have made them think twice about driving to the basket. We have an incredible defensive weapon and he never saw the floor.

          • According to ESPN, Walker's 29 is a UCONN record for most points in 1 half, ever.

              • As directed, I have been doing some research.

                UConn bench play:

                Players - 5
                % of game minutes - 40.5
                % of points scored - 31.3
                % of rebounds - 31.0
                % of assists - 57.1
                % of steals - 37.5

Is it fair to say that the bench kept UConn in the game, particulary when Walker was on the bench?

                Just wondering.

                • That is disturbing considering we had the advantage 6-10. We now know what it takes to compete with the projected 10th place team in the Big East. So now we should have an idea what it will take to contend for the Big East title. That's the level we need to shoot for. Screw the Valley, pretend they are the Big East. That's the level at which we have to play.

                  • Will the problems get fixed, that is the question? and not continue for 4,5,6 more games??? Marshall, I think, still has some things to learn as a bench coach (otherwise, Altman wouldn't have owned him like he did).

And what time and channel will the Chaminade game be?

Uh, I wouldn't say Altman "owned" Marshall. Taking out the Screw in the Lou game, he was 4-2 against Marshall, with 3 of those 4 wins being 3 points or less. Owning he did not.

As I noted in another thread, we did play zone at times down the stretch and it made no difference in the result. See the "Mission in Life" thread for more discussion.
remember when the announcer kept talking about three sets of eyes? that was zone and like you said it did not help.

Not to mention a large discrepancy in "time to recruit" and seniority of players over those years.

                            • This comparison is silly. It's apples to oranges. For an apples to apples comparison let's look at each coaches first 3 years:

                              From wiki regarding Dana Altman:

Hired on March 31, 1994, . . . led the Bluejays to a slightly improved 7-19 record in 1994-95 before his 1995-96 squad jumped to 14-15. In 1996-97, Altman’s team was 15-15 and followed with another substantial jump to 18-10 and a bid to the NIT in 1997-98.
                              From wiki regarding Gregg Marshall:

                              2007–2008 11-20
                              2008–2009 17-17
                              2009–2010 25-10 NIT 1st Round
They have very similar track records so far.

By my count the record is 3-4 with a 2 point loss in Omaha (a joke) and a 1 point loss in Omaha and a 3 point loss in Wichita.

I'm not sure that's exactly owned, but whatever. At this point, I'm not sure I give 2 shits.
