  • ShockerChants on Twitter

ShockBand and I had talked about this for a little while and I finally decided to pull the trigger on it. I've started a Twitter account called ShockerChants where I hope to coordinate chants for the home games.

Yes, I blatantly stole the idea from Bill Simmons during the Celtics playoff series with the Cavaliers last year. It worked like a charm for them, I figured it was a good idea and worth a shot here.

I'm thinking we could use it to pass around ideas between games, but during games (all of which I, or a designated representative will be attending) it would be coordination only. If we could get enough students (and codgers like us with the season tix) to follow it and play along, it would be truly impressive to visiting teams.

So, to start, the first concrete idea I had was to able to call out different free-throw distraction techniques. Mix it up. Everybody waving their arms randomly every enemy freebie gets to just be white noise, but if they mix it up I figure there's a better chance of actually distracting a shooter.

Also, we can use this as a clearinghouse for info on our upcoming opponents - info that could potentially be turned into a funny/surprising chant.

    So, what do y'all think?

You should post this somewhere on facebook too, in the shockermaniacs page or any other wsu bball stuff. That will help get the word out there too.

I love the idea. I'm sure there are enough students with Blackberries that technology could orchestrate and organize some things that just don't translate well from a yellow slip of paper on a seat.

Some of the best distractions are unexpected things that can cut through the ability to shut distractions out. Chanting "Jumping Jacks" while moving up and down with your arms simulating the upper body portion of a jumping jack might be interesting.

Stuff that is totally off the wall can cut through a player's ability to ignore a crowd, but it can be hard to convince a crowd to do something that makes abslutely no sense.

I've always thought that when our opponents are shooting free throws it might be effective for the crowd to go totally silent until the player starts his shooting motion. Then explode while he is in his shooting motion.

                        Ask yourself :

                        "What would Booker Woodfox hate?"
For some the glass is half full and for others half empty. My glass is out of ice.

That's actually one of the ideas I had. Another interesting idea is do the opposite. Go nuts as normal, then clam up just when they start their shot.

Just noise during a FT is pointless. That's common and probably a part of most player's routine on the road.

Silence would be totally unexpected and might be more distracting than noise. Silence interrupted by something totally off the wall might actually get through.

I'm thinking about silence - then "air ball" (or random food items "brocolli" or random animals "elephant") when the ref hands the ball to the shooter. Then silence until the shooter bounces the ball.
