  • 2010-2011 Shocker Men's Prouty Ratings

Here is the formula used to get the Prouty Ratings.

Prouty Rating = [Offensive Efficiency + Total Offense + Possessions Gained + Win Rating] / 4

    Offensive Efficiency = TP / (FGA*2 + FTA)
    Total Offense = (TP + A*2 - TO) / Player MIN
    Possessions Gained = (REB + S + BLK/2 - PF) / Player MIN
    Win Rating = Player MIN / (Team MIN / 5) * (Wins / Game #)

    Code:
        > 567 A+
    534 - 566 A
    500 - 533 A-
    467 - 499 B+
    434 - 466 B
    400- 433 B-
    367 - 399 C+
    334 - 366 C
    300 - 333 C-
    267 - 299 D+
    234 - 266 D
    200 - 233 D-

      1979Shocker:

I know we've gone over some of this before, but I'd like to re-visit the use of the Prouty Ratings, particularly for all the SNrs viewing the results. Please let me know about any of this that you disagree with.

Generally, a viewer of these ratings needs something to give them a value of worth. Thus, the A-F grading system which I know you hesitated in using. As I see it, the value of whether the team wins or loses the game has too much impact on an individual performance rating. It's good and proper for a team rating.

Example: A player's game stats: 12pts, 4-9 FG (1-3 from 3 pt), 3-4 FT, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 TO, 1 steal, no blocks, 2 PF in 25 minutes. I think most would think this a pretty good stat line, shall we say a B effort. If I calculated it right, with a Win the rating would be .483 (B+), with a Loss it would be a .326 (C-). So, the same performance by a player, from a individual game, would yield a much different grade evaluation depending on whether the team won or lost. After two games, a win and a loss, the player rating would be .404 (B-). Granted, as more games are played, this will have less impact, but two players with the same season stat line would still have a fair difference in Prouty evaluation if one's team was winning 80% of their games vs the other team winning 45%.

Particularly, be wary of this rating in the early part of the season. If you look at the Men's first game, one would think they had a very huge game given the large number of players with very high ratings. On the other hand, in the Women's first game loss to a decent team in overtime, yielded individual numbers that could resemble a blowout.

Basically, just be cautious in applying a grade (A-F) to a player's actual stat performance.

Basically what you said makes sense, but it is just like any other sport where averages (or handicaps) are used. They usually vary somewhat in the first few weeks until enough games are under the belt where the averages (or grades) then become fairly steady, and therefore reliable.

It was just a few years ago, when J.J. Redick led the nation in Prouty ratings with a .596( not sure about the 6, but was .59 something).

The wins/losses do affect it a lot. If you saw the ratings for the first women's game, it wasn't very good. A win for them would have made it must better. Also a player's rating increases more when they have more minutes in a game that is a win.

More than anything, the ratings show how a player is doing compared to his teammates. It's hard to really rate a player when you don't know how good the opponent is. If they play all bad teams, they should have a lot better ratings than they would against good teams.

If anybody is wondering where the Plus/Minus ratings are, I went to Hawaii and did not endeavor to do them while there. Upon my return, I find that the play-by-play included in the stats at goshocker.com no longer include the substitutions in and out. Therefore it is not possible to do the plus/minus ratings.

I'll miss your input. It was an excellent balance to the Prouty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't your study data indicate that 13 of our 16 players are rated as a "C" or below?
