  • It's not much...but it's a couple exhibition scores already

Means basketball season is fast approaching. Can't get much from these, but here it goes:

    SIU - 80
    Quincy - 59
    FINAL

    FG%:
    SIU - 53.6%
    Quincy - 36.4%

    3pt%:
    SIU - 27.8%
    Quincy - 22.2%

    FT%:
    SIU - 65.2%
    Quincy - 50%

    Reb:
    SIU - 47
    Quincy - 30

    Assists:
    SIU - 16 (30 baskets)
    Quincy - 12 (20 baskets)

    Turnovers:
    SIU - 18
    Quincy - 16

    Steals:
    SIU - 13
    Quincy - 6

SIU had 10 players log 12 or more minutes (not surprising of course being the 1st exhibition).

They had 4 players with double digit scoring:

    Carlton Fay: 10pts (5-6 FG), 6 rebs, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 22 min
    Gene Teague: 11pts (5-6 FG), 8 rebs, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 1 block, 20 min
    Troy Long: 12 pts (4-10 FG), 2 rebs, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 26 min
    John Freeman: 11pts (4-6 FG), 3 rebs, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 17 min[/list]

On the one hand, this is confirmation that Evansville has some issues - as they did last year.

On the other hand, file this under the "anything can happen" designation.

On the third (bear with me) hand, there's not as much gap as people think between D3 schools and mid/lower-tier D1 programs.

The better D3 schools generally have 1-2 players per squad that (1) turned down scholarships at D1 schools or were recruited by them, and (2) that could get playing time at anyone outside the top 30.

The year before Billy Gillispie went to Texas A&M, Trinity (San Antonio, plays in the same conference as DePauw) came very close to taking the Aggies down in Reed Arena in College Station.

Putting on my Captain Obvious hat... it's early. They're young. The 3 point line is only 19'9". Color me worried if the Shocks can't dominate Denver with size and weight and rebound advantage, but my only takeaway from this is that the Shocks need to (1) dominate the Valley, (2) sweep Evansville, and (3) find a way into Conference USA (or better).

          Aces

Isn't good free throw shooting kind of automatic for schools in Indiana? I know one game does not a season make, especially an exhibition -- but if Evansville really can't do that, they're in seriously deep doo-doo this year.

And to think we almost lost to that joke of a team twice last year. On another note, something needs to be done about that program. Whether it's us, or the MVC, someone needs to do something.

Maybe not so Obvious. The men's 3-point line was extended to 20'9" beginning with the 2008-09 season. The women still use the old 19'9" line.

                ;-)

Sloppy game. Adam Leonard didn't play. Freshmen played most of the game.
