  • San Diego State picked to win Mountain West

San Diego State was announced today as the pick in the preseason media poll to win the Mountain West Conference, but coach Steve Fisher knows better than to feed into the hype.

Yet another reason why I think everyone's non-conference schedule freak-out was over exaggerated. That will give us perhaps 4 non-con games against solid NCAA worthy teams. Maybe more with bracket-busters. I didn't expect much more. We have to win the ones we got!

The schedule freakout was over the home noncon games which some worry takes some away from the few good games away from Koch. We knew this was a good game as soon as it was announced. Maui COULD be good if we get past UConn. Tulsa isn't bad. Then there's crap. Lots of it.

I guess the reason why I was so surprised about the "freakout" is because I don't see how this years non-con (home or away) is any worse than any other season in recent memory.

The last 4 seasons non conference home games.

          06-07
          Rockhurst
          Chicago St.
          UMKC
          Maryland Eastern-Shore
          Kennesaw State

          BB= Appalachian State

Stunk at home, away games at LSU, George Mason, Syracuse and tourney games against New Mexico and USC made this schedule.

          07-08
          Arkansas Pine Bluff
          Wyoming
          Maryland Baltimore County
          Texas Arlington
          LSU
          UAB

One of the better home non-con seasons I can remember. LSU stunk, so did UAB actually, but both are big to pretty big names. Played Baylor in a tourney.

          08-09
          Florida A&M
          UMKC
          Centenary
          TCU
          Gardner Webb
          Northern Arizona
          ND State

          BB=Cleveland State.

Stunk at home, road games at Texas Tech, TCU (who isn't very good really) and tourney games against Sienna, Michigan St, and Georgetown made this schedule.

          09-10
          Fairleigh Dickinson
          Arkansas-Monticello
          Alcorn State
          Texas Southern
          USC-Upstate
          TCU
          Texas Tech
          North Dakota State

TCU is a Mountain West team, but they were awful. Texas Tech was a good home and home, they made the NIT last year, were ranked at the time. Tourney games against Iowa and Pitt make this schedule. Other than than...Stunk.

          10-11
          Texas Southern
          UMKC
          Chicago State
          Nicholls State
          Alabama A&M
          Tulsa

Stinks, Tulsa is alright. But road game at San Diego State, And two guaranteed games against high-profile BCS programs in Maui, and three if we can beat Uconn makes this schedule.

I guess the issue is that Marshal didn't come up with another LSU, TCU, or Texas Tech type 1-1-1 or 1-1 deal? I just don't see how this non conference schedule is any different from the others in recent history. We always are going to have a tough time...if not impossible time getting good schools to come to Wichita. We always have, note above.

This schedule, like all those others gives us a good chance to make the NCAA if the MVC stays to par, and we make some noise in the non-conference tourney's.

I say this years schedule is much better than lasts and we had an excellent chance at an at-large had we not botched the @Drake, @Evansville, @Bradley games, and maybe still had we upset a @Utah State or @UNI game.

Previous years we weren't set up to make noise is why. We knew we were rebuilding and the schedule wasn't going to make or break anything.

I doubt UConn will mean much win or lose as far as UConn goes. Lose and nothing good comes from Maui other than people get to visit the tiny island nation. Win and we do get what should be two quality opponents. Lose that game and all we have are Tulsa and SDSU. That's not a good tournament resume.

And Tulsa isn't even played in the Chuck. I know it's still a home game but it'd be nice to have a good game at CKA.

And for the record. There were a lot of complaints about last years schedule as well and had we not had so many crap teams at home we may have been positioned better to be in the NCAA picture despite a few slip ups down the stretch. Scheduling a bunch of 300+ RPI teams doesn't do anybody any good. Except the 300+ teams who get a nice payday.

Let's also include entertainment value. If any of those home games, except MAYBE Tulsa, turns out to be a real challenge, then our performance was poor and not very entertaining. If not, and we run over those opponents, well.....watching that 5 times isn't very entertaining either.

I been one to beat the drum about having only one less home game per year, but have alternating (home/road, road/home), quality mid major opponents. Three 250-300 (or below) RPI teams should be plenty.

I agree with Sub and ST.

Scheduling up is a priority for teams ripe for the NCAA's. I can understand going easy when first entering a program and growing pains are everywhere.

I noticed a lot of "stink" with home games mentioned by Shoxfan. If you like stinky things, then I guess you're ok with it.

I never said I was okay with it. I just don't see much more a program in our situation can do, other than more 1 and done MSU and Syracuse type deals. I would love just as much as anyone else to see home and homes with KU KSU OSU OU ect. But that just isn't going to happen until we have sustained success year after year.

I would support a 1 and done deal for exchange for one of the home pastys this season i guess, but I agree with a lot of what Sully had to say, winning is better than losing, and doing too many of those games leads to an awful lot of losing..

As far as scheduling up because we are NCAA ripe, what about the 06-07 season? The LSU deal was made, which was a decent 1-1-1. George Mason was a return for BB. We had the 1 and done for Syracuse. And the Vegas tourney was not near as good as Maui is this year..

I really don't see that 06-07 schedule is really any better than this years, and we were definitely NCAA ripe that season.

As I said before I see no difference between the home games we had any of the previous years to this year, and I see that this years schedule is just as good if not better than the last 4 years. I also think it is as good as it could have been unless you wanted more 1 and done's...which do not help getting more good home games..

I am not happy about the scheduling issues we have, but I think they come with the territory of being WSU, not by Marshall's or anyone else's pitfalls.

00-07 our Kenpom SOS was ranked #61, #148 Non-con. Last year #134, #244. I imagine this year's is going to be much closer to last year's schedule rather than Turgeon's last year. I think the scheduling department is one thing Turgeon has over Marshall, I enjoyed the schedules much more with Turgeon than with Marshall.
