Matt Braeuer was one of the best. Not many could have more 'heart' than he did, and he was fast. His outside shooting held us up a few times too.

He will never be forgotten, if nothing else, for the last second 3 pointer against Creighton!!! What an ending to a ball game...

It appears to me that for many the start of their knowledge of WSU point guards begins with when they began to follow WSU basketball. For me it was the Cal Bruton, Robert Elmore, Jay Jackson era. Since that time I have yet to see a better point guard for WSU than Cal Bruton. I cannot compare him to previous point guards. After Cal Bruton I would have to go with Matt Brauer as my favorite.

Engrshock ... Thanks for the reply. Unfornately, I never did see Cal Bruton play, but I will ask my brother about him. He has been attending games since the late 60's. And I thank you for your vote for Matt Braeuer too.

Lots of times people vote for the 'old' players thinking they were better when a recent one may have been just as good. Remember, those were different times with different rules back then, so it is hard to compare the old vs. recent sometimes.

And I hope Matt becomes a full fledged head coach someday of a D-1 program.

Because of my young age, my memory of Stallworth, Bowman, and Ernie Moore is somewhat vague. But I do have memories of seeing them on television and in person, especially Bowman and Stallworth. Ernie Moore was lightening quick and with his speed, and the Shocker press, he often sped the game up by beating the other team down the court.

I believe that the 63-64 team would be a candidate for the best team in Shocker history too. The 64-65 team was the Final Four team but the 63-64 team had Bowman, Stallworth, and Moore on the team. Stallworth and Bowman were on the 64-65 team but only for the first semester so the Final Four team was without them.

I do remember one TV game against Michigan in 64 (1st sem.)with Stallworth vs. Cazzie Russell. The Shockers were, I believe #1 in the Nation and Mich. #2 (may be opposite). Michigan won on a half court shot at the buzzer by Russell to win. Great game. I was young, but think I'm right.

You remember that right and we did not have a lot of TV games back then but that game between the #1 and #2 ranked teams received a lof of national publicity.

My recollection was that Cazzie's game winning shot was probably not quite half court but it was a good 35 feet.

My Dad talked about that game, and in his opinion, that team for the first semester in 64 was the best WSU team EVER. Jamie Thompson came off the bench for them.

I am young enough that I only barely remember X, but my Dad's all time top 5 in order are:

              Stallworth
              Littleton
              Jabai
              X
              Cheese

He puts Cheese over Carr and Levingston, though I don't know why.

He still speaks fondly of the Book ends as well as Nate Bowman, Robert Elmore, Cal Bruton, Kelly Pete, and and Ernie Moore. He almost seemed angry when I was in High School and compared Mo Evans (as a sophomore) to any of the former greats...He did love Jason Perez though.

Cheese Johnson was AWESOME! If you ever see a tape of his game against Marquette at Marquett in 77 when they won it all, Cheese went up hung in the air and triple clutched a shot over Jerome Whitehead for a basket that may be one of the best in Shocker history.

You can find highlights on YouTube of some Australian NBL games that Cal Bruton played in.

Here's one between Illawarra and Brisbane in 1979. They mention that Bruton is 25 years old from Wichita State during the highlights.
Beaton Park was the venue for this 1979 NBL game between Illawarra and Brisbane just 3 weeks after the NBL began.

His team wasn't in this game, but before the game he was given the award for highest scorer in the league.
Some highlights of the first ever Grand Final for the National Basketball League in 1979.

Here's a news profile that was done on Cal Bruton back in 1982.
Cal Bruton is a member of the NBL Hall of Fame and this profile piece was done back in 1982.

I was in college during the Cal Bruton days and have vague memories of Greg Carney. Cal is the best that I have seen.

While I definitely give Matt his props, I personally think Clevin was better than Matt. I said several times last year that CH was the best PG since Cal Bruton. I still think that.

Another PG that was good that you don't hear much about was Bob Trogele, who replaced Cal after graduation. He played pro ball in Germany after graduation. He was in the same incoming freshman class with Cheese and Steve Kalocinski (sp?).

While it's somewhat hard for me to agree on Cheese over Antoine, he was definitely more of an impact player than Cliff. Cheese definitely had the ability to single handedly bring the Shockers from defeat to victory all by himself. He simply didn't have the supporting cast that AC had around him.

Jamie Thompson was money from the deep corner. What a solid shooter and he made most of his throws. Warren Armstrong was a world class athlete and could jump out of the gym at 6'2". He won a jump ball versus a 7-footer and made one of the best most impressive dunks in Shocker History. Armstrong was solid in every facet of the game.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.
