  • Rest in Peace Ron Washington

Ex-Shocker Ron Washington apparently passed away on August 22nd. Thanks for the memories Ron. He apparently had a very full life after leaving WSU.

Update… September 13 While FOTM didn't receive any additional "memory essays" from Slim's many long-time friends and comrades, one fascin...

Sad. What years was he at WSU?
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kickass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

Mid 60's. He was on our final four team.

edit. Let me change that to sometime around there... Probably came in right after that. Really thin but I don't remember calling him Slim while he was at WSU.

I believe he graduated in 67 or 68 at the latest.

I believe he was known as the "thin man."

My memory is that he came just after the final four team, and also that "the thin man" was someone else later. Taller and from Mississipi or Alabama.......maybe a Bailey?

                  Ron Washington

I was working in Surgery at Wesley in the fall of 1965 when young Ron Washington injured his knee. I took Ron from his hospital room to Surgery and later from Recovery back to his room.

I recall seeing him listed as 6'5" - 139 LBS. I know that sounds nearly impossible, but he was really - really skinny. I remember his legs looking like toothpicks.

He was in the same Freshman class as Warren Armstrong (Jabali) and they played together on the freshman team (freshmen were not elligible at that time).

He was so quick when he arrived at WSU and his knee injury certainly hurt his career. When he got hot, he could really shoot.

From the blog entry in the first post, it sounds as if Ron had some thinking in common with Armstrong/Jabali, too.

I remember being impressed by how thin he was, what a good rebounder he was for someone of his size, and what a shame it was that the program had gone into decline shortly before he arrived.

He came to town with Armstrong and they were advertised as the "kangaroo twins." I don't recall him having any knee injury, but he missed most of one year with a shoulder injury. They were freshmen when the Shockers went to the final four and couldn't play.

Ron was a solid scorer and rebounder. The way I remember Gus Greebe referring to Ron on the radio was--"Ron Washington, the THIN man from Chicago."
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Just read his bio. Thanks for posting. I was about 10 or 11 when he was playing, went to a lot of games, and I had no idea any of this was going on. In fact I didn't until I read his blog just now.
