  • 24-Second Shot Clock

Good article by Fran Fraschilla on ESPN.com as to why he feels high school and college teams should adopt the shorter shot clock. What think you basketball gurus?

I like the 35 second clock. It allows for team basketball, and better sets. 24 seconds is just too quick.

Just curious - Are you expressing an opinion with or without reading his article?

There's no way HS would ever go to one that short. It's been hard enough to push for the implementation of the shot clock at that level but one that is making progress.

I really don't think college should go under 30. There's no need to speed the game up. And taking another 11 seconds away from teams is just going to lead to sloppier play and that will be less enjoyable.

It's an Insider article. I suspect very few of us have subscriptions.

Honestly, I don't think the article will have any effect on my opinion. I like the 35 second shot clock, and I like college basketball much more than the NBA.

I think they should set the shot clock to 30 seconds, which is the same as the women's.

Hank Iba pretty much invented the 50-point game at OSU in the '50's when everyone else in college basketball was scoring in the 70's. Passing the ball around a lot and not even trying for a shot unless something opened up for a gimme was considered boring, so the shot clock was introduced to put some pressure on the offense to do something other than wait.

Now teams like SIU (when they were good) have emphasized defense at the expense of offense and re-introduced the 50-point game to college basketball. That's boring basketball.

Marshall's theory isn't too far removed from the SIU pattern, except Marshall recruits player who can play offense and SIU wasn't concerned about that at all. SIU played boring ball, but made 2 S16s doing that.

If there's any reason to go to a shorter clock, it's to force defensive-oriented teams to run their offense a little quicker. The problem is that those teams only have to play D for 24 seconds instead of 35. That makes a defensive-oriented game easier. The faster time clock would increase the number of possessions, which would increase the score on the scoreboard, but that wouldn't make those games more interesting to watch.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
