Deerslayer, Isaso, Ms. Isaso and I went out today and watch pick-up games. Play was supposed to start at 4:30 P.M., but it was delayed 15 minutes. The team played on one of the practice courts.
Regretfully, I do not have much to say about the practice. Perhaps Deerslayer or the Isasos might add some comments.
1. Gabe is back. He is a very good team member. He is one of those guys, who will do whatever he is asked to do and he will do it with gusto. He plays hard.
2. Garrett was not there.
3. The players as a group shot poorly. I would call it awful. Deer observed that the players lifted shortly before play and it may have had an influence on the shot making. This aspect has been mentioned before by posters and I think it is correct.
4. The players played race horse basketball and a foul fest ensued. There was so much fouling, I kinda lost interest in the play.
5. Everyone was there except Ellis, Hatch, and Stutz.
6. I realize some on this fine forum think Jerome will be a good to very good outside shooter. He will have to prove it to me. He put up a shot from the key just inside the 3 line. It was so ugly, at first, I thought Kenny had returned. He does a nice job of cleaning up around the basket. He is athletic and has pretty good ball handling skills for his position.
7. The speed and athleticism of the team as a whole is quite impressive. The Shocks will run some folks into the ground this year.
8. For the life of me, I cannot remember the big guy, who weights about 240#. He will walk on this year. I will call him Bret. Bret and Joe were on the same team. The opposing team turned the ball over in their forecourt. Bret could have grabbed the ball and passed it to Joe for a fast break opportunity. Instead, Bret let the ball go out of bounds. Then, Bret inbounded the ball to Joe. Joe was displeased and sorta got on Bret's case for not grabbing the ball and starting a break. I do not believe Bret will do that again.
Isaso made a nice observation. He said that Joe might be one of the team leaders this year. I think he is right.
9. I don't think point guard will be a problem this year. Isaso questions some of Williams' decisions and I concur. Demetric is a stud race horse. He pushes the ball with a high octane.
10. E.O. played one set, maybe two. He was 1-5, but he did show a touch more energy than he has in the past, when I was present. In fairness, he was fouled on one of the shots. In fact, there was so much fouling going on, he might have been fouled on all five shots.
11. The team only had the court for 45 minutes. They were bracketed on the front and back end by a volleyball camp. I don't think I have ever seen so many pony tails in one location. It reminds me of a song.
12. Clevin Hannah was there. Joe and Clevin guarded each other. I thought it got a little personal. Not mad personal, but pride personal.
13. I am pretty sure that I will be partial to Joe Rags. He is fun to watch. He is a pass first point guard.
14. Deer and I watched E.O. and Gabe warm up before play began. E.O.'s ball handling skills have greatly improved, since he first arrived on campus. He is just flat awesome to see in shorts. If he develops skills, he will be something else to defend against.
15. Shortly after Deer and I entered the arena, we ran into Coach Gross and D.O.B.O. Okon. As usual, Coach Gross was outgoing, friendly and helpful. As usual, Mr. Okon was not outgoing and maintained his sour puss demeanor and was not helpful. Okon never looks like he is having fun.
