  • Change in the tiebreaker system in the MVC

Saw this retweeted on twitter. Came from sCUm's SID Rob Anderson after attending the MVC SID meetings.

MVC abandoning home/road point system tiebreaker for men's basketball, will now be based on non-conference Strength of Schedule instead.

That would seem to be better because it might encourage teams to schedule tougher opponents in the non-con right?

So if you schedule really tough, and lose every one of those games, you gain an advantage in the league. That makes sense.

It only encourages teams that expect to compete to schedule up. At least in my mind those that expect to be not so good have no real incentive.

Personally, I'd rather go back to monetary consequences for those who don't schedule to a certain level. But maybe I'm wrong and teams would love to win the tiebreaker and finish 7th instead of 8th...

Logically, if they lose every one of those, they would probably lose most of their conference games, and not be in contention for a tiebreaker at the end of the season...

logically, the same tie breaker would be used all the way down to 9/10, which affects who plays who, and more importantly, the possible 6/7/8 tie breakers for deciding who plays thursday night.

This has good intentions (hopefully encouraging tougher scheduling), but doesn't it shift from a fair and objective system to a subjective one?

This just seems like it will be fraught with error. For example, whoever scheduled against Iowa last year would have looked like a genius .. had a decent boost to SoS coming off "okay" 2008-2009 year, but they were a total turd last year.

Getting lucky scheduling doesn't seem like a good way to break a tie?

Good intentions but Illinois State's schedule will still be an embarrassment as long as Jank is there.

Yeah I guess I can applaud the effort. I think the old monetary fine was a better way to do it though.

The more I think about it, the more stupid I think this idea is. Desire for strong strengths of schedule and tie breaker systems are totally unrelated issues, so tying them together and punishing one for the sake of the other is just ridiculous.

I agree with most of the sentiments. Like shock-it-to-me said, they are both totally unrelated. Valley tiebreakers should be determined by games that are actually played in the VALLEY. This idea is pretty dumb.

Don't fix something that works. Go back to the good ol' days and hit schools in the pocket. Everybody knows money talks.

                      ... No really, deuces.

I'm sure this new method will somehow screw us.

You don't need a tiebreaker if you win by 3 games.

I sure am glad no one was walking past where I sit at work right when I read that. They may not have understood why I was laughing so hard at work. Probably woulda thought I was goofing off or something.

The bad part is, I'm certain you're right - we just don't know precisely how yet. I had already been trying to figure out how the new rule would benefit Creighton - because we all know that anything that comes out of the league office favors the Bluejays.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
