  • Texas Tech perspective on Koch Arena

“I remember in that game my ears popped two or three times,” said Nick Okorie, a senior shooting guard last season. “It was a big shock to come in there and for the gym to be rocking like that.”

Note: This is the second in a three-part series about attendance at Texas Tech men's basketball games. The first part, which ran Sunday, can be read here . The third story will be published Tuesday. …
“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

That's a great find, Wuzee. It explains the scheduling problems that even BCS schools face. It's worth reading because WSU faces some of the same issues.

Tech scheduled a home-and-home with WSU because THEY COULDN'T AFFORD to play guarantee games. They lose money on every guarantee game because the payout to the visitor is more revenue than they get from the game. Wow!

That opens up a scheduling opportunity for WSU that hasn't appeared in our discussions: Find a BCS team that has trouble getting fans to its OOC games. They could be receptive to home-and-home games because their travel expenses are less than what it costs them to play a home game.

This might be especially true of "football" schools like Tech, because I doubt the football program is receptive to sharing "their" money with basketball.

With WSU able to sell out OOC games, that puts us in a position to offer to cover travel expenses for a team to come to Wichita, but we might not require that for our return visit.

It's not just the mid-majors that are getting squeezed. Our sold-out arena gives us the ability to do some things other schools can't do.

I wonder if the same statistics are available for the mo valley schools as they were in the TT article?

There are five Big 12 schools that report less net revenue from men's basketball than Tech. And aTm is only a little more.

Are those other 5-6 schools reporting similar scheduling problems? Or is Tech's athletic department that dependent on men's bball revenue to subsidize the other sports? (meaning football isn't a money-maker there)

How about Colorado and Tad Boyle?

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

I don't think Tad wants to subject his team to that right now. I wouldn't mind looking into that in a couple years when he gets his players in and makes them better than they have been.

Sub nailed a large remaining obstacle that brings up a strange circumstance.

The BCS teams that don't draw too well are the lower-tier BCS teams. Scheduling WSU to a home-and-home is a tough road game for those teams, and in an up year for WSU, it could be a tough home game for them too.

The interesting result is that it migt become easier for Evansville to get a home-and-home with a BCS team than it is for WSU. If a BCS team is shopping for a home-and-home to save some dollars, there are plenty of opportunities to find easier games than WSU.

Tech was a reasonable travel cost and Knight was right about it getting his team experience on the road in a hostile environment that would be as tough to play in as anything they'd see in the B12. Knight took his chances with the loss - and fans in Koch got to see something like 20-some points scored in the final minute of a game. The end of that game should go down as one of the great games at Koch because of the unbelievable rally Tech put on and WSU countered it.

If they were that shocked that it was loud in Koch arena, then I really question what there assistant coaches were addressing in their scouting reports.

Sometimes you can beat info like that into people, but until they experience it, they really don't know what to expect. Or at least to what degree.

Yes, that was a great game, one of the very best last season, and if we had been able to play Hannah against Pittsburgh, we could have won that one too!

What's that old cheer, "We're proud, and we are Loud!!!".
