Schaus was THE key to the Roundhouse Rennaisance Project and very much responsible for resurrecting the basketball program.

He coined the term "It's a Great Day to be a Shocker", a galvanizing rally cry, and brought us the term 'wow factor' early and often.

Not that clever phrases are an indicator of real success, but you felt the man knew what the heck he was doing from Day 1. Obviously, we don't collectively have that same level of confidence thus far from ADES.

People love to have their beliefs reinforced. Schaus ran with that and fired up the Shocker Nation like no one had before or since. He spoke of Excellence and delivered a lot of it.

It's all about timing and professionalism.

ADJS was a cool customer who recognized the meaning of timing and how to make a statement that reflected the moment.

        There is a difference.

I've met ADES on multiple occasions.

He is a nice guy and one who you will have to work hard to generate a negative comment about.

On the same note, every time I met with him, he said the same thing, "Hi, I'm Eric Sexton, Athletic Director."

The third time, I swear I almost said "Hi I'm Eric Stratton, damn glad to meet you."

You just had to be there. 8)

That project never gets done - or started for that matter- without Dr. Beggs' leadership.

And what did Jim Schaus say when he met you?
The second time I met him he laughed at The Mentor and yours truly and said " It's the Cincinnati Connection back again! Man, I sure miss Skyline chili. How have you guys been?"

Some explanation is necessary so here goes.

We met him a year earlier and explained who we were and location.
JS was @ UC for a while so he knew all about Cincy and some unique qualities about it.

              One being Skyline Chili.

If you aren't familiar, Skyline is different tasting chili, that is served over a plate of pasta, topped with a mound of cheese. It's really different.

The point is he knew exactly who we were, where from and started a conversation with us as if we had talked the day before, when we had not seen him in a year.

I met ES three times during the past basketball season.

He had no idea who I was each time.

I haven't met Sexton but had a similar experience with Schaus. Though our meetings were few and short, he remembered who I was. The man was sharp with a memory like a black hole.

So in order to be a good AD, one must remember every Shocker fan's face & name the 2nd time they see them. That counts me out.

I didn't even so much as imply that. And neither did anyone else.

An aside: This is called "Cincinnati-style chili" and Skyline is just the most-prominent of several chains that serve it in that area. It is damn good stuff, too.

Long-defunct Spaghetti Jack's used to serve a version of it in Wichita.

Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

In the context of criticism of ES and the absence of anything concrete behind these criticisms (lack of concrete in what has been presented not in what might or might not exist behind the scenes), comparisons to the previous athletic director will have the obvious implication of indicating ES's flaws as an AD.

If the observation wasn't meant as an indication of the core skills an AD needs (and those which, according to the observation JS had and ES does not), why make the observation in the first place? It was a story about small talk that would have no relevance to anyone expect as a criticism of ES's ability as AD.
