  • What would be the effect of 4 "Super" conferences

There's talk that some in congress aren't happy with that. Could Congress break that up under threat of taking away athletic departments tax exempt status? It's going to get really interesting I think. Who knows mabe the non BCS schools might end up gaining from this in the long run.

It would not surprise me to see them band together and break away from the NCAA, following the model they have used with BCS football. Or maybe they will insist that they become a division all their own.

It will be the Clash of the Trifecta of Titans where the three biggest greed-mongers on the face of the earth will square off against each other:

    1. The NCAA
    2. BCS football schools
    3. The Federal Government

I don't believe they would break away from the NCAA.

I think they can't wait to break away from the NCAA. So far they're making the NCAA look like a bunch of rank amateurs.

If 4 super-conferences are formed, they will have locked up the top 56-64 brand names in college sports. They will have careully carved up the TV markets with East Coast, Southeast, Midwest, and West Coast regions.

They would already pretty much control and dominate football markets and revenues. They could throw a basketball tournament together that would include every team. They could play region against region top to bottom in a playoff that would have intense regional loyalites (and TVs tuned in).

The NCAA would be left with all the Cinderella teams.

As far as declaring those schools' athletic departments for profit and bringing anti-trust laws to bear - I'm confident the schools would think they collectively had enough clout that no one could get the backing to go after them without committing political suicide. Imagine angering the alumni and fans of the top 60 or 64 name brands in college athletics.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

They won't break away from the ncaa. They will just form a BCS for college basketball.

They will keep the ncaa around to run all of those minor non-revenue sports championships, while they take all of the big money from football (which they already do) and basketball (which they have now have to share a little bit with the other schools).

It will not be good for any school outside of a BCS conference.

I see a break from the NCAA so they can get away from all the restrictions (and penalties). With all this additional money being generated, they will all have the means to begin paying larger stipends to players and loosening recruiting restrictions. Why would they want to be under the same limitations as all the smaller schools?

They will have the gold. They will make the rules.

                    This is flawed.

The NCAA is the natural balance of governance creating equality, if at least amongst the BCS conferences. Without governance, the Big 10 will have no way whatsoever to ensure the Pac 10 is following any rules.

And there will be rules; to say that the teams want to live in an environment devoid of rules is to believe in a fabricated world.

Yeah I think it would be more likely that the 4 super conferences form their own division within the ncaa. That way they can keep their money and make their own rules for themselves but still be under a governing body with some basic rules.

This is the scenario that will be played out over the next few years.

I agree with Royal that this is a possability. Why not set up your own governing body, but allow pay for play in order to insure that the best players wanted to go to the BCS schools? Could they banish title IX too? This has to be something that USC would be in favor of.

Title IX is federal law, so I have no doubt they would try to do something, then just do their damnedest to cheat around it.

Seriously though, no. Federal law is federal law.

If it comes down to breaking into two divisions, although I would be disappointed that the shocks were in a second division, I would never, ever, ever watch the disgusting BCS division again. Secondly, the teams relegated to the 2nd. division should neverr play the BCS again. Let them beat up on each other and see how much interest their is in the losers. That is the key. The mid and lows need to form their own association andj keep those bastards out and let the chips fall where they may. Ricky Bobby said it best. They are just turning into pros and everyone hates the pros now. Nobody may care whether I watch but I can assure them...I wont.
