While on probation for a lack of institutional controls KU did the following (short list)
1. Funneled millions of dollars to AAU coaches who provide players to KU
2. Provided $800K of laundered money to the father of a student athlete.
3. Negated NCAA scholarship limits by having a player volunteer to walk on during the period of time his father was getting $800K from his connections with the athletic department.
4. Had a ticket scalping scheme going that existed unchanged through the change of an athletic director and the change of personnel in charge of tickets.
The last one is the biggie. How do you change the athletic director and change the people responsible for distribution of tickets and have the same exact ticket scam running in the athletic department? It's not the AD. It's not the director of ticket distribution (or whatever they call that position). The identical ticket scam continues when all those are changed.
KU is facing the death penalty. The sanctions placed on USC are the first indication that the NCAA might not let the major players slide. KU's infractions are far beyond what USC did. KU was already on probation.
I don't care if it was Slippery Rock instead of KU facing a potential death penalty and watching their conference disappear at the same time, we'd be talking about it.
When it's KU in the off season, it's not really an obsession. When it's KU possibly facing having a NC taken away from them - it could be any school - we'd be discussing it.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

oops, i forgot to add the sarcasm smiley.
Any one of the items I listed is supposed to be enough for the death penalty if the school is already on probation.
Last time KU got caught cheating (cash in envelopes to players, illegal trips for recruits to attend games, coaches taking tests for players, etc.) KU got slapped on the wrist.
The B12 unraveling could be the least of KU's problems. The package deal of a conference having to take KU and KSU could end up being the albatross around KSU's neck. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Aargh is right on. The uncertainty surrounding the severity of KU's inevitable penalties is a significant negative in the current conference talks. The timing of this could not have been worse for the beakers.
Perkins has gone from being one of the most respected and sought after AD's in the entire country to a total leper in the course of a few months. It is fantastic.
