Yep
You're correct, Hatter. Shocker bowlers can earn tournament prize money while still competing for WSU -- and some have been known to win quite a bit -- whereas NCAA bowlers would not be able to do so.
Pretty far off-topic (in the great ShockerNet tradition, as is this whole thread, really) -- but no one would see this if I posted it somewhere else.

Call me crazy, but I think the Shockers might have won the All Sports trophy.
For the All Sports calculation, I wonder, if tie breakers are considered.
Even without the baseball tie breaker, I think the Shockers may have won the trophy.

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Illinois State has earned the 2009-10 Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Championship, as the Redbirds combined with Wichita State to claim an amazing 11 (of 18) league titles. It was one of the tightest results in league history, as Illinois State edged second-place Wichita State by 0.098. ISU had team titles in women’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s tennis, and claimed its first-ever regular-season baseball title this past weekend.
MORE: http://www.mvc-sports.com/ViewArticl...CLID=204950438
It marks the 12th all-sports crown for the Redbirds, second-most of any league school (Wichita State has 17). Illinois State has finished in the Top Five of the league’s all-sports race for 28-straight years, and the Redbirds have finished first, second, or third in 18 of the past 20 years.
Wichita State’s seven titles (shared baseball with Illinois State), and Illinois State’s five titles are among the best all-time since 1992-93 (when the women’s and men’s sports began competing under the same umbrella). Meanwhile, a school has had an aggregate point total better than 3.0 (average finish of each sponsored sport) four times since 1993-94, but this year is the first time that two schools had a figure better than 3.00 as both ISU and WSU finished under 3.00 (2.735 and 2.833, respectively).
The All-Sports Trophy is based on a school’s average finish in each of the sponsored championships by the Missouri Valley Conference. Teams are awarded one point for first, two for second, three for third, etc., and the total accumulated points are divided by the number of sports in which a particular school competes. Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regular-season competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet.

Congrats to the Shocker's Men's and Women's programs. Any other season and their point total would have gotten the All-Sports Trophy.
Since many here are more knowledgable about the items I'm going to address, please correct any errors and answer questions.
There are 18 MVC sponsored sports. No school participates in all 18, but here is my break-down for each school: 17 sports - Ill St; 16 - Drake; 15 - UNI, SIU, WSU; 14 - Bradley, Evansville; 13 - MSU, In St, Creighton. 4 schools (including Ill St) play in 2 additional non-MVC sponsored sports, 4 in 1 additional non-MVC sport and 2 (Bradley and WSU) do not play in any additional sports. Is there a penalty for each MVC sport a school does NOT participate in when it comes to calculating the All-Sports Trophy? It would appear that a school participating in fewer sports could have an advantage if there was not a penalty. On the other hand, most of the schools playing in fewer MVC sports do not do well, (Creighton in particular), in the All-Sports standings indicating there may be some sort of penalty. Anybody know?

I'm sure you could debate whether it is better to play in more sports and have a broader pool for your average and the advantage of less competitive sports or better to play in fewer sports and have resources more concentrated.
Given that the 2 best schools by far have been Illinois State (who plays the most MVC sports) and WSU (who plays a middling number of MVC sports), you would have to say that participating on the low end doesn't seem to help win all-sports trophies, but that could just mean that the teams that don't compete in many sports don't fund athletics as well as those who compete in a lot of sports."Cotton scared me - I left him alone." - B4MSU (Bear Nation poster) in reference to heckling players

Thanks TMH. Just wanted to make a couple of comments.
1) Again, kudos to WSU, and the fans, for their long time support of Shocker athletics as a whole. I can't find my info on past All-Sports Trophy standings, but if memory serves, sCUm has almost never done well. It always amazes me how uppity and special they think they are, yet put most all their eggs in the men's basketball program basket so they can "look good and feel good".
2) A special :good: to the Redbirds for their 1st place finish this year, but even more so, for how well they have done long term with their athletic department. Illinois State has finished in the Top Five of the league’s all-sports race for 28-straight years, and the Redbirds have finished first, second, or third in 18 of the past 20 years. All this while supporting 19 total sports, including football and 17 MVC sponsored.
