Mascot to encourage a former WuShock battling cancer

WICHITA, Kan. -- A Facebook request to WuShock, Wichita State University's mascot, will result in the mascot traveling to Denver to meet and encourage Zach Mesch, a former WSU student who performed as WuShock last year. Mesch left school and was hospitalized in Denver after being diagnosed with leukemia in November.

WuShock will try to bring a smile to Mesch's face with a visit after a benefit walk, sometime between noon and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at The Children's Hospital, 13123 E. 16th Ave. in Aurora, Colo. Before the visit, WuShock also will attend a special fundraising event in Mesch's honor.

Mesch has been hospitalized for about 16 weeks and is need of a bone marrow transplant. This is the second time he has battled cancer. He was diagnosed at age 16 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in his knees. After two years of chemotherapy and two years of being cancer free, Mesch was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Wow, how sad. Best wishes to Zach and family.

WuShocks do so much good and for so little recognition and gratitude. I know I appreciate the efforts and recognize the games would not be the same without spotting Wu sometime during the game.

I'll be praying that Zach gets well and for the other WuShocks to stay healthy and keep up the tremendous effort they give to so many.

The athletic department sent a basketball signed by the entire men's team with Wu to give to Zach in Denver. It was a very nice touch.

What a fun morning, hanging out with new WSU friends, and running for such a good cause. I think that Wu's visit was really an amazing thing for everyone! Plus, it's not every day you can catch Wu in Denver!

Zach, all of Shocker Nation is pulling for you. Get well soon.

Another way people can show support is to register to become a bone marrow donor. The process is very easy though I do not know where one does so in Wichita.
