Just because you were a hell of a player doesnt mean can coach.
Buddy Bell
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
the list goes on.
1998: 58–24, Eastern Conference Runner-Up
1999: 33–17, Central Division Champions, Eastern Conference Runner-Up (note: season was shortened due to lockout)
2000: 56–26, Eastern Conference Champions, NBA Finals Runner-Up
Maybe he couldn't, but he was effective.

Losing an assistant shouldn't be taken lightly. The importance of an assistant is often overlooked by fans.
Bradley fans wanted to fire Les a few years ago. Then Les hired a supposedly retired assistant, started winning some games, and made a S16. Then that assistant retired again and Bradley moved right back into the middle of the pack in the Valley where Les has had them through his entire career. Now Bradley fans want to fire Les again. I think Lowery lost an assistant at SIU just before he imploded that program, but I'm not certain.
It's a big adjustment for a staff and affects everything from how recruiting is organized to how practices are set up and handled, to how game-time decisions are made. Grant has been Marshall's "guy" for quite a while now, so this may have an impact on the W/L record next year.
EG is a good guy and was a trusted source for GM.
But concern over recruits from the SE is not warranted. After all, what just happened to a SE recruit who missed being close to home?
WSU needs to continue focusing on Mid-West recruiting and building relationships with the right people.
Having CJ & MG on staff is the perfect combo to have in place.
Those two have more connections in the MW than a phone book. 8)Above all, make the right call.

From the Wikipedia about Cliff Levingston:
In 2000, Levingston began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Fort Wayne Fury of the CBA. In 2001, he served as an assistant coach with the Dodge City Legend of the USBL. In 2002, he returned to Dodge City to serve his first stint as a professional league head coach; that year the Legends won the USBL title, and Levingston was named USBL Coach of the Year.
In 2003, he was sentenced to four months in prison for failure to pay child support.[1][dead link]
From 2003 to 2004, Levingston served as an assistant coach for the Harlem Globetrotters. In 2004, he coached the St. Louis Flight of the ABA.
As of 2005, Levingston was hired as assistant coach of the Gary Steelheads of the CBA; that year the Steelheads played their best season in franchise history, though they lost the Championship game. In 2006, he briefly served as assistant coach for the Kansas Cagerz, and in November he was officially hired by the Gary Steelheads (of the USBL), as head coach for the 2007 season.
In the fall of 2007 Micheal Ray Richardson was fired by the Oklahoma Cavalry of the CBA. Levingston was hired to replace him.
It seems like he can coach a little .....

Heck, even look at D-1 assistant coaches, they move around quite a bit. Most don't have long-term contracts.
