I'm going to preface this with "If Marshall stays", because the Clemson job has to be appealing.

If Marshall stays, he can build his resume past where it is now. Clemson has to be tempting, but a fairly successful coach is leaving under circumstances that don't make Clemson look like long-term employment at this time.

If Marshall builds his resume, he can cherry-pick from multiple BCS offers. Turgeon looks like he could be set at aTm for the rest of his coaching career. It's a FB school, and if Turg can produce winners and go to the NCAA's and win some games there, that's all he's asked to do at aTm.

Clemson doesn't look like that type of job right now. Maybe the challenge of recruiting against and coaching against the power schools in the ACC is a challenge that could tempt a coach. The downside is that if you don't succeed, you're looking for a job.

I think Marshall stays, builds his resume and looks for something with more stability. Turg did OK by abandoning his roots and moving somewhere no one expected.

After reading the 10+ pages of speculation regarding Clemson, I think we did indeed need a poll.

His job here is nowhere close to being 'finished'.
He's commited to his players.

He will be here next year and the year after that.

Marshall will be able to get a much better job with a much better salary by staying at WSU through the end of the 2011-12 season. HCGM is not a dumb guy and moving now would be dumb.

It doesn't all boil down to money. There are other considerations which have been discussed on another thread.

Marshall was pretty quick to put a stop to the Iowa rumors, but not so this time. Could there be legs to the rumor he would consider Clemson? Possibly. Could it be that he would use this "rumor" as leverage in a salary boost? Possibly.

There is only one person who knows for sure, and the big man isn't speaking at the moment. I know it's hard to wait, but that's just what all of us are going to have to do. And I for one am going to do so silently and without speculation.

I should have elaborated more. I know there is more going into this decision. hOwever, I think we should give him a raise, and extension and maybe up the buyout. We give him job security and more money and it will be extremely tough for him to leave.

I didn't mean for anyone to take what I said as a criticism, just an observation on my part. (Besides, with this being the off season, what else do we have to do but speculate.) And I agree with you 22 that we need to do all we can to make him happy, but the things that are going to make him happy may be out of our control (conference affiliation, golf all year round, friends and family close). The other things in the mix (facilities, recruiting budget, fan support) are pretty well taken care of. Waiting is hell. Just wish they would get it over with. The silence is deafening.
