  • MTXE

It was interesting to hear Tom Izzo talk about how he will never allow his team to be outfought in a game ever again. "From now on, it's fistfight city."

I think every coach wants his team to be tough, but to what degree do they demand it? How do you coach tough? I think Frank Martin coaches tough. I think Bill Self and Gregg Marshall don't do as great a job of it as is demanded by today's game. Marshall has said he would consider bringing MTXE back to the program. I think it's a good idea, if you know how to get the message across. It certainly appeared we didn't win some games this year that were winnable, but WSU wasn't in fist fight mode.

Graham Hatch and Gabe Blair were the two Shox I thought exhibited MTXE on a regular basis. Maybe Ragland will have that in him, Stutz will be a stronger force, and the emphasis will be on fighting to win.

I'm in rare agreement with Fredsteer. When the other team punches you in the mouth, what do you do about it? Punch 'em back, or complain to the officials?

Tom should take his own advice. Type in "Izzo whines" as a google search and see how many hits you get.

ok, so MTXE stands for Mental Toughness Xtra Effort. I get that. But how do you bring a saying "back" to a program? And you mention fist fights, which makes me wonder how tough you really want them to get.

I've always respected Tom Izzo; however he did come across as a 'poor loser' during the post game interview. He sounded bitter and felt a foul should have been called on the shot with 6 seconds remaining in the game.

I'm obviously rooting for Butler and pleased that they won but the Butler player pretty much admitted in an interview that he probably did hit the guy's arm on the shot. I can't blame a coach too much for being frustrated that a missed foul call might have helped keep you out of the national championship game.

Every coach on the planet wants MTXE from their teams witdh or without a slogan. If the slogan helps bring it back, but if you are going to be consistently good you need to consistently bring MTXE to the table.

Real MTXE without the slogan is just as good as MTXE with the slogan and a heckuva lot better than just a slogan.

Watched a PBS special on Coach Bob Hurley this weekend. That guy coaches TOUGH.
