  • ESPN is even more stupid than CBS

They are saying it's been 54 years (when Bird and Magic met) since the Valley had another team in the sweet sixteen. That would make Bird and Magic over 75 years old. It's bad enough when they don't check their facts, but at least think a little. Do Magic and Bird look like they are over 75?

54 years is the last time the Valley won the NC.

Wrong. Cincinnatti was in the Valley when they won back to back titles in 61 and 62. Also, wasn't Louisville in the Valley when they won three times in the 80's?

Louisville was not in the valley when they won the NC.

I heard this last night on CBS and it just about killed me. They forget so quickly in 4 years... :wsu_posters:

They posted it in The Daily Oklahoman too. I posted the link above. The last paragraph is completely wrong.

We did win the Valley Championship in 2006 right?

They're referring to Tournament Champion or the automatic qualifier.

I think it's pretty lame and the catchy way the media is using to suggest that the Valley is fluky. Who the hell cares when the last tournament champion made it to the Sweet 16?
              Deuces Valley.
              ... No really, deuces.

Nobody calls the tournament winner the Missouri Valley Conference Champion

The same phrase is in the UNI hometown paper. It was corrected in the comments section of that paper and several others throughout the midwest.

One way to turn this statement around is to say that the Valley has only had 16 at large teams selected since 1994 and 7 of them have made it to the sweet 16 (44%).

I think that is a pretty impressive stat.

And if my memory is correct, only one of them (SIU in '07) was expected to get there (#4 seed). Was the first one in that span Tulsa? What was their seed?

Didn't SIU lose in the second round to a higher seeded KU in '07?

EDit: RS got it right with SIU a 4 seed losing in the sweet 16.

What is still sad is that espn is still running the fact that uni is the first mvc team to make it to the sweet 16 since larry bird on the trailers at the bottom of the screen. That was as of noon today so I'm sure they have already fixed it. Isn't espn situated in the Great North East/Coast? Can't someone give us a break?
