Okay, let me preface this by saying that I know this is a trippy idea that no team, let alone any BCS team, would go for - so commentary that "it would never happen" is completely superfluous.
Now, I've said before that if the NCAA expands to 96 teams, then it should mandate that no team can schedule more than 10% of it's non-conference games with members of BCS conference. This would reduce the ability of certain teams to put together a non-con schedule with high-major teams and low-major cupcakes and then claim a tough non-conference schedule no matter how badly they do. (I also think that one-off "buyout" games should be eliminated or severly controlled, but that's a different discussion.)
Thinking along those same lines I came up with this idea: If there was a team out there that really wanted to prove that they were for real in a particular season, then they should schedule the following three non-conference games:
@Wichita State
@New Mexico
@Utah State
We could call it "Running the Gamut." Three of the nastiest places to play in all of college basketball.
If they could go 2-3 in that stretch, that would be a major boost to RPI, and it would fall within my previous scheduling guidelines. Even 1-3 would be respectable. Plus they would get return games against decent opponents.
For the three programs involved, that would give us one or two home games per year of teams wishing to test their luck, and one or two more road games against quality opponents.
