Apparently the above story I quoted was posted on Phog.net (my coworker is a KU fan) and he tells me someone replied thinking it may have actually been Drake in '52.
Ralph Miller tells some great stories in his book "Spanning the Game". But he doesn't mention anything even close to this story.

I know the Moose will bring his trenchcoat but he only wears the legs of trousers when he wears it. I just don't understand what kind of a fashion statement he is trying to make.

In 1951-52, WSU lost at home to Drake, but by 2, 65-63.
Wichita beat Drake in 1952-53.
I believe Detroit left the Valley after the 1956-57 season.
