If it is not okay to voice displeasure at your home team by booing, then it is probably not okay to criticize the 10,500+ people who regularly sell out your arena. (and these sellouts occur even against crap teams that are in the MVC)
Will WSU have as many or more people than other schools in St. Lou?
This comment was out of bounds. This is not a question of accuracy, but a question of intelligence

Was Coach Marshall's reference not 100% correct?
He doesn't need to make it a zero-sum comment.
Theirs is better than ours. That's it!"He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!

Why focus on something you can't change when there are things that need his attention on the floor? Doesn't that make any sense? I don't take offense at anything he's saying but he's fighting a losing battle in my opinion.

I don't mean to pick on you Veritas, but that comment is, imho, a perfect example of a one track mind.

When you look at things from 1 perspective you probably aren't getting the whole story.

Do I think think our crowds are good? Yes.
Do I think you could classify them as AAA?
When compared to Utah State? AAA might be too kind.

Hey if we had won 23 game/season for 10+ years our student body would probably have grown and become better than it currently is. Organic growth of a fan base takes time and it will happen if the team wins. So for those who think the student section is the problem - I say just win baby.

What HCGM said is not untrue. They have a much more raucous atmosphere than we have. However, he still should not have said it. Really, it's just common sense.
I sort of get the feeling that he is trying to dish out some ego checks to the local media and fans. It seems like a bit of a defense mechanism, and I don't think it is an excellent strategy. I understand, however, that Marshasll's volatile personality does not lend itself well towards conventional expectations of behavior.
It seems he is a little resentful of the heightened expectations. This last statement will draw some fire, but I really get the feeling he just doesn't like it in Wichita that much and will be wanting to give openings such as St. John's, Oregon, etc. close inspection this summer. I hope I am wrong, as I believe we are positioned to be an excellent squad next year and he would benefit greatly from sticking around at least one more season.

Possibly - As a student, I was at almost every game during Randy's last few years, but I also understand the idea of opportunity costs. There are other options for entertainment and the sub-par product from 1990 to the mid 2000's doesn't generate a lot of interest. Things were building in the MT error, but things fell apart quickly. Ten years of winning would probably equate to more traditional students and more students at the game. If you believe USU would have the support it has without continuous success than my argument is no longer valid...

GM said it like it is. Why are any of you upset about this? Our crowd, though great, will never be as good as those found in college towns with great programs. It is what it is. WSU is a commuter university with a lot of non-traditional students. This means our crowd is filled with a lot of older, more reserved fans.
He is comparing apples to oranges however. If you want to compare crowds, then compare us to Memphis, Louisville, Cincy, etc. Other programs smack dab in the middle of their respective large sized city.

I liken the AAA comment to someone's wife asking if a pair of pants makes her butt look fat; you might know what you are thinking, but it is better left unsaid. The marriage goes on and no one is really upset.
My daughter goes to KU and my son goes to Texas A&M. When I've been to basketball games at Allen, the atmosphere is more like USU than WSU, but it is more of a student crowd. At A&M, for the big games, just like in football, the student body gets together for cheer practices. Again, more of a student crowd than WSU. The thing I can't figure out is it only for students to get fired up, or could all of those grownups sitting in the best seats get into the action as well? I only see the Shox on TV now, but it does give me a good view of the crowd and how participative they are.
I remember Turgeon calling out the student body at A&M when he got there, and it didn't work so well for him. Last week, the night before the Texas game, he showed up and bought pizza for the student that were camping out to get tickets. He learned that there is more than one way to motivate a crowd over which he has no authority.
My point is, don't take Marshall's comment so seriously. Who knows what he meant, but it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to me. Just some Sunday morning ramblings from Texas. Oh yeah; before someone complains about me being in Texas and not there in Wichita, I promised to, and I send, a pretty good donation to Hillside High every year; 6 of the best years of my life were right there!

HCGM's comment indicated a one-track mind and perhaps looked at things from one perspective (coordinated cheers from 4,000 students - which is indeed impressive).
His reference screams out "minor leaque" with which I'm commenting.
What I see are near sell-out crowds during the down-times, incredible support for the basketball program and coach, and an amazingly loud Koch arena.
What I don't see are 4,000 WSU students well-rehearsed with orchestrated and coordinated cheers. But not having one attribute should not take away from what you do have.
Greatness can take different forms. WSU will probably never have 4,000 students in a 10,500 seat arena located in a metro area of nearly 600,000 people. However, that doesn't mean that WSU's support is not great.
I realize there is a lot of support for HCGM - including me. However, he has got to learn to focus on the positive of what he has in contrast to the negative. He made a dumb off the cuff comment and inadvertently put down the very program with which he's a part.
