  • Utah State fans perspective

    Wichita State vs. Utah State (based on watching essentially two WSU games)

    Wichita State is very similar to us. But there are enough differences to make comparing and contrasting our teams interesting.

    Wichita State and Utah State both:

    * run if the opportunity is there but don't force the break
    * value each and every possession offensively and defensively
    * play good team defense in both M2M and zone
    * apply a token pressure to slow the pace of the game down
    * execute offensive sets with multiple screens rather than isolating and going one on one
    * spread out the scoring among about 7 players

    Wichita State strengths:

    * they are long and play passing lanes very well
    * they have size in the frontcourt and rebound the ball well
    * they are very physical defensively
    * very good perimeter defense

    Utah State weaknesses:

    * struggle taking care of the ball under pressure
    * post players tend to get into foul trouble
    * are usually undersized at every position

    Utah State strengths:

    * perimeter shooting (USU beats you with inside scoring, rebounding, and execution but they blow you away when the three's are dropping)
    * Experience
    * Interior offense/ great footwork and post moves.
    * Stew!
    * The Spectrum

    Wichita State weaknesses:

    * Interior defense
    * young team
    * have struggled on the road

      One more for the Shockers: The Shockers love to foul, particularly on the road.

        From which conference are the refs? USU will be tough to beat at home, but I'm interested in seeing how they handle the MoVal and WSU D.

          Our perimeter D isn't too bad. The inside defense is what kills us. If you guys know how to get it inside, we're likely going to have problems.

          Last night was better in some ways, but mostly more of the same problems we've been having. The dribble penetration is killing us. If we could finally figure out how to defend that I'd like our chances against lots of teams if not all teams, home or away. However, we've been hoping for that to happen for some time and thus far haven't seen it.

          Either way, it sounds like fun to watch this game. You guys will be tough to beat, and I think all Shocker fans would love to see our team step up and give you guys a challenge.

            Yeah our perimeter D is usually pretty good and teams rarely shoot a good percentage from 3pt. However, sometimes we over defend the guards and that is where we get killed with the dribble penetration.

              One more, opposing team players who have hit less than 20% from the 3 pt line go 4 for 5 and every player who shoots less than 60% ft's now hit 90%+.

                To their credit the Aggie fans are relentless - I absolutely despised them when I lived in Reno and was on the Wolf Pack bandwagon.

                  This will be a great matchup if your perimeter defense is good. Utah State is #1 in nation right now in 3Pt. shooting %

                  The 2024-25 NCAAM Regular Season Player stat leaders on ESPN. Includes stat leaders in every category from points and assists to rebounds and blocks.

                  Also Brian Green shot about 30% from 3 during out of conference play.

                  He is now 3rd in the nation in 3pt % by shooting 71% since WAC play has started (25/35).

                      WSU does have the best 3pt defense in the Valley so that should be an interesting match up.
