  • Shocker Decade

A great article by Paul Sullentrop. He is a terrific beat writer. WSU is very lucky to have him writing for an otherwise awful local newspaper! I can't take much exception with his rankings. In terms of pure home wins, I would rank the Creighton game at the Kansas Colliseum right up there, even though it wasn't in Levitt/Koch. In terms of pure electicity, nothing in the decade will surpass the Florida State NIT game. That game is the closest Koch has ever been to how the round house was every game during the peak of the Smithson/Carr/X years. Turgeon did recruit great young men to come to WSU, but his first two years had guys on his team who had no business wearing a WSU uniform. Thank God for the Burns-Howard class! Finally, I think it's interesting how quickly I have forgotten the names of players who made contributions to the program. I had forgotten Fridge Holman. I was never more upset at a sporting event than when he threw his head band. Number 2 upset was the foul not called when the kid had his arm through Randy Burns legs.

Absolutely a great article. Also pretty darn good timing. Too see how far this program has come over the past 10 years is exciting. Even more exciting is knowing where this program is HEADED at the current pace it's on.

      Re: Shocker Decade

Agree with most everything you said Fred. Just one note though. Turgeon's first team was mostly Smithson players with the exceptions of Matt Clark and CC McFall (I think that's right). The next year he had that recruiting class of Howard, Burns, Kampman, and Miller. Still haven't had a class close to that since.[/quote]

Great article. Jamar sure is a stat sheet filler for the decade. One of my all-time favorites. That Grinch-like grin did it for me. I think he would have been fun to hate for the other teams.

          Great article...brought back some memories.

I think that Marshall is recruiting much better athletes and they are good kids also.

A lot of highs. Some disappointment. I wouldn't trade my love of the Shocks for anything. Onward and upward to great things! :yahoo:

Turgeon had to take a lot of risks in his recruiting. Some paid off (Burns/Howard) and many didn't. Fortunately he had that one really good class, which also included Miller, and got lucky to get a couple good transers to boot.

Can you imagine him and Ramon on the same team.

I'm probably the only person here who liked Randy Burns better than Jamar Howard.

What about Jamie Sowers, who could have redshirted and would have ended up playing on the sweet-sixteen team? Instead he got cocky, and left in 2003/2004 because of reduced playing time.

                        NICE MOVE BONEHEAD.

Our big Season (2006) was the 6th Season of Coach Turgeon. We had a solid inside/outside team with quality depth. The double-overtime win at Koch versus SIU is still vivid, watching Paul Miller lighting them up like a Christmas tree for 30. Then Matty B. was "all world" at the end versus Creighton draining the 3 and 4 point plays. K. Bradley made some big big shots that Season. Kyle Wilson was a solid asset. Sean O. was hot versus Seton Hall and PJ had a huge game versus Tennessee. It was a very special Season. I doubt anyone predicted that Paul Miller would be Mo Valley Player of the Year early on.

Coach Marshall is right on target to take us back to places we want to visit. Yes, there will be setbacks along the way just as we had in the good-ole-days. However, through it all, we have a bright future and the Shocks are heading forward and making progress and some fine day we will again be Dancing with the stars in March.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

We don't want to just visit those places. We want to make the NCAA Tournament our home away from home.
