Even more famous, Wichitan Brad Schreck roamed and dominated the paint in the Valley at WTSU.

A very good friend of mine, Mike Boyd, was a 6'3", 185 lb. TE as a SO at WSU when he got a start against North Texas in 1968. I think the year is right - I was in the military when it happened.
The starting DE on that side for North Texas was a guy nicknamed "Mean Joe Green". Yeah, that one. Here's Mike's description of how the game went.
"I tried to block him, but he just picked me up, threw me across his body and stepped into the hole. So, I figured I'd block him into the hole. I blocked him the wrong way and sure enough, he picked me up, threw me across his body, and stepped into the exact place I was supposed to block him. That worked twice. After that he just stood there and threw me back and forth across his body until he figured out which way the play was going".The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

After the split, Wichita St, Tulsa and New Mexico State were designated as 1-A while the rest of the Valley was designated 1-AA.
New Mexico state left the Valley to join another 1-A conference (the Big West was 1-A at the time). Tulsa and WSU decided to stay in the Valley at the time (for all other sports) and play as independents in football.
WSU didn't last long as a football 1-A independent but Tulsa went about 10 years as an independent before leaving the Valley all together to join the WAC (a 1-A football conference).

Maybe I got my first season tickets during Thompson's last year? Or maybe I just caught a few games and got the season tickets during Smithson's first year. At any rate it was painful back then.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!
