          While the ESPN author may be right in his conclusion, the sensationalism was not just absurd, but also incorrect at this point since we don't know exactly how it will be formatted.

          I don't see #1 team ever playing the #96 team (who would currently be a 16 seed), because that team (and the other low seeds) will lose their first game. If anything, the first games played by the #1 and #2 seeds will be more interesting than they are now.

          Of course, that doesn't mean the tournament should expand. The obvious solution is to pare down the number of D1 teams. But what's obvious isn't likely unless you get overwhelming support from the other D1 institutions.

            I think the 96 teams format would probably lead to a #1 getting bounced in the first round within a couple of years. There are teams that play in the NIT tourney every year that are capable of beating the best teams in the country. Some even do it during the regular season in conference play.

            I think the ESPN writer does have a good point about letting teams with 6-12 conference records into the tourney. Maybe the NCAA will look at tweaking requirements before expansion, but I seriuosly doubt it.
