  • Joe Book's "17 Valley predictions for 2009-10"

    Remember this http://www.examiner.com/x-7020-Bradl...ons-for-200910?

Guess who brought it up on the Bradley board? Right, it was electricmayhem!! I thought (some of) his predictions were poor.

I hate to be that guy, but look over this article and thread again, now that the season is rapidly approaching March.

Marshall is leading the Valley in scoring, and Odiakosa in rebounding.

I'm not sure what the point of this post was, but I was looking over old stuff, and T said to save these predictions...

Besides, there are some funny digs at me in this thread...

The first link should work now.

ADDED: The only prediction specifically about WSU was

        8. Wichita State can't fully replace the rebounding of Ramon Clemente, but Toure Murry and Clevin Hannah develop into excellent players.

I think WSU's rebounding is fine and stating that Murry and Hannah would "develop into excellent players" is such a no-brainer that it hardly counts. With regard to rebounding, it's harder to get offensive rebounds when the team's shooting percentage goes up and this year's Shocks certainly shoot better than last year's Shocks.

From Joe Book's point of view, it seems that WSU hardly matters in the Valley race. To me, this is a sort of "prediction" and it seems completely wrong. For example, he writes
        5. Northern Iowa wins 13 games and the league title.
        and
        14. Illinois State wins the Valley tournament and at least one game at the Dance.
I think UNI will finish better than 13-5 (more like 15-3 or 16-2) and, if WSU wins tomorrow at UNI, the Shocks have a shot at the title. Illinois State does not look like a MVC tourney champion right now but who knows what will happen?

In all fairness, we havent played the Valley tournament, and God help us if ISU wins it!

I wouldn't count the 'Birds out in STL. They may be struggling some now but they have the talent/size/athleticism to get it done.
Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan
            RIP Guy Always A Shocker
Carpenter Place - A blessing to many young girls/women
ICT S.O.S - Great local cause fighting against human trafficking
Wartick Insurance Agency - Saved me money with more coverage.

I'm not sure what your point is Spangler. EM wrote some nice articles breaking down the Valley as a whole before the season started.

Did you know Jake Kelly was going to miss 90% of the Valley? Did you know SIU was going to dismiss a starter? How about P'Allen, Taylor Brown, Dwayne Lathan etc?

EM was complimentary of many, critical of few, and gave his best opinion of where he thought things might end up.

Last I checked, nobody asked him to do it, he did it for free, and my guess is he was more informed as to the strengths and weaknesses of all the Valleys teams than roughly 99% of all the posters on this site or any others.

Are you saying he was wrong about WSU? Maybe he was, but last I checked the Valley season was about 61% completed, so unless his predictions were for that time frame I'm not sure now is the right time to hold him accountable. For that matter, is it even necessary to hold him accountable at all? Of all the posters from other sites, EM is about as pleasant and polite to our program as anyone.

A lot of us may have been way off on our predictions about WSU. Hell, I know I (gladly) have missed several predictions myself.

As far as I am concerned, feel free to make fun of me before you try to hang someone like EM again.

Not quite for free. He was writing for a site where he gets paid based on traffic.

But I agree with the rest of your post.

                  1. If you look at the discussion on the Bradley board, you see that Electricmayhem "bumped" an old thread as a bit of a "dig" at Bradley fans, especially those who objected to his sixth place prediction for Bradley (if i recall correctly.) To me, Joe Book set himself up for critical comments.

                  2. I was not impressed with the 17 predictions when they first came out. With respect to WSU, it seems that he had to say something but he didn't really say anything about WSU (i.e. his comments were essentially vacuous.)

                  3. If WSU should win the MVC season, this will be a huge story (i.e. 5th place in the preseason poll to first) which is unequaled since ... 2006. If you want to be in the "prediction business," missing the biggest story of the season would be unfortunate.

So, Joe Book restarted a thread on the Bradley board in order to "rib" (in a friendly manner) other fans. As they say, turn about is fair play. I'm not sure why yours are in a wad; I doubt that JB cares.

                    Who the hell cares?

He made predictions at the beginning of the year. It's a little more than halfway through. Last time I checked the year hadn't ended yet. His predictions don't seem that off-base, considering how many he had. I agree with Doc.

                    Where are your predictions Spangler?
                    Deuces Valley.
                    ... No really, deuces.

The sun will rise in the east. (ala " Toure Murry and Clevin Hannah develop into excellent players.")

It's not that big of a deal but "Joe Book" can be fun to banter with. He seems to be in the mood to banter (based on the bradley thread) and it would be fun to see if he wants to play here. (You know he looks at SN on occasion.) I disagree on the accuracy of his predictions but I agree that it is still early. I usually like his articles but the particular one in question treated WSU as an afterthought. Maybe he can discuss what was his opinion of WSU in August. Maybe he's a bit bored too? :D

I would say his prediction of Hannah and Murry is only half correct. Hannah has developed into an "excellent" player. Murry, in my opinion, is still in the "good" category.

Totally agree. I think TM may have been reading this place too much in the summer and early fall and some other preseason press clippings.

At times this year, he has tried to do too much. He just needs to settle down, take good shots, keep up the defense, and ignore the "All-Valley" talk.
                          Deuces Valley.

                            You guys make me laugh...

I do enjoy the banter, and often set myself up for people to rip on me. I'm a big boy, I can handle it.

I love provoking intelligent discussions, and I don't find that there are many of the team boards that provide that.

Like I said months ago, I've always respected WSU's fans and program. I still believe that you all are some of the most passionate, smart basketball fans in the league.

You are right about the rebounding line -- WSU has improved your RPG, as well as your rebounding margin this season. I'll still take Murry or Hannah on my team any day.

I took a few months off to tend to some personal matters, but I'm back writing once or twice per week. Feel free to check out the site.

BTW - it is true that I'm compensated by Examiner.com, but we are talking less than a penny per page hit, so I haven't quit my other two jobs yet. :good:
