Would never have happened if your buddy ShockerFever had not chosen to post his usual drivel dissing hard working farmers. I originally was trying to give an outsiders view on a discussion about why there is a perceived ignorance of WSU nationally and state wide.

Once again the myth of friendly Wichitans is shattered.

I had a great time at GameDay and the game yesterday. Not happy about the outcome but I got to do 2 things WSU fans rarely if ever get to do. Play KU (and damn near win) and have GameDay visit my Alma Mater's campus.

A Valley school beat you to GameDay. How do you like them apples? The only reason GameDay came to Mancrappin was because KU was there. Would have never have happened otherwise.

And there is one thing WSU will never catch KSU on and that is the number of losses you have been handed by KU. Quite hilarious.

I'll leave with this from BuyLowSellHiCat from Gopowercat - sums up Kansas State very well. You can make fun of the "rural" setting from your oh-so-sophisticated Wichita (chuckle) but:

"KSU doesn't have the biggest school, the biggest population base to draw from, the biggest endowment fund, the biggest budget, or the most talent. No school, no fanbase, and no team plays/cheers/works/roots harder than the KSU players, coaches, and fans. That is something to be proud of."

I managed to catch the end of last night's game. At the end of overtime, the production crew flashed a graphic announcing that the win marked KU's twenty-first (21st!) 20+-win season.

Assuming (safely I hope) that the Shocks manage to grab the requisite number of games, depends on who's counting, in this year's final stretch, AND win 20+ games for the next 20 years, the year will be 2031. Think about that. One more time. 2031. It's pretty outrageous.

Re: Home Court - It looks like Allen Field house has witnessed 233 wins and 12 losses in the past 15 seasons of regular season play. It's MBB inhabitants are also on a 54-game win streak in the facility. As a facility, it also receives nearly universal critical accolades for embodying the spirit and tradition of NCAA Basketball. Come on, this is a place that's so lively and intimidating that Baylor Coach Scott Drew recently sparked controversy by taking his team off the court, at least in part, to avoid having his players exposed to the KU highlight video and player introductions. I'm not sure why any reporter would think this is an unresolved topic for discussion; regardless of who is included as the #2 team. But, as we all know, the drive for splashy headlines (particularly ones that cater to a geographic or ideologically bounded audience) can make reporters say fantastically stupid things. We suffer for their sins.

Remember kids. Hating is for haters. You'll be happier if you learn to appreciate what you have, than if you develop rabies. Chicks don't dig foamy mouths. It's true.

That said, "Octogon-of-Doom" is about as lame as lame gets. It's weak. It's forced. It brazenly evokes the MMA (which is about as un-collegiate as you can get). This is further demonstration that nick-names shouldn't be forced.

Congratulations on completely missing the point. I would have conceded Kansas as the premier program in the state. They have earned it. The point of the original post was to point out that while discussing what purported to be an inclusive list of basketball teams in the state of Kansas, WSU was not even mentioned by the media outlets listed.

So if you're done basking in the glow of your trip down memory lane, maybe we can move on.

Having actually read the article that got your panties wadded up in the first place, I can't say I'm surprised that you missed the rhetorical subtlety behind my post. The article, itself, simply doesn't jive with your feelings of being slighted. The article, as it was written, addresses only the home facilities of the (then ranked) 2 and 13 teams in the country - both of whom are situated in the same state. Trust me, that's news by any local sports page's definition. WSU wasn't mentioned in the article, because they weren't part of that particular game. I didn't read the same headline you 'reported' (without link or citation) as having put a burr under your saddle. Maybe the person writing the headline didn't fully read the article, or was (as I alluded to earlier) simply gunning for splashy headlines. It happens. Just try not to be one of the beetles that focuses their life on rolling it into a ball and pushing it downhill; infecting others with their stink in the process.

Being a fan of Shocker Athletics and knowing how to graciously acknowledge the accomplishments of others are not now - nor should they ever be - mutually exclusive categories. This is true despite what you might read on this board.

That said - I just noticed a fan post to the article in question referencing the "Octagon-of-Doom" as the "Hawktogon". See? That didn't take long. I happen to appreciate the comedy. The lesson, as always, is don't try to foist premature, unearned nicknames on the general public. The backlash is rarely flattering.

I was and wasn't surprised by the lack of WSU mention in the Star's article. After living here in the Wichita area since '85 I know that WSU has a very good home atmosphere but the problem is that outside of this area (with the exception of a few WSU Alums) very few people in the state and Big XII pay much attention to WSU athletics. There just is no identity for WSU throughout the state. Has WSU ever tried to extend the radio broadcasts beyond the one station in Wichita? That would help I would think though more than anything, IMHO, it's the fact that KU/KSU were charter members of the Big6/7/8/12 and continue to be today. Belonging to a major conference just brings more attention. IMHO WSU should have jumped on that back in the '30s when the Big 6 was formed or joined sometime before football had the tragedy in 1970.

Thats said, if Marshall does well and WSU has a string of good NCAA runs notice will be taken.

It also has to do with listeners and readers. In KC, the last I heard, there were over 60,000 KU alumni, more than double the number of MU alumni and maybe triple the number of KState alumni. In the late 80s the numbers ran something like 40k, 15k, and 9k respectively. I have no ideal how many WSU alumni there are in the KC area, but it would be nowhere close as KState. The media is going to do what it takes to attract listeners and readers. And with KU alum specifically, there is simply no awareness of schools outside the B12.

Congratulations is now in order for (barely) knowing the meaning of the words "rhetorical" and "subtlety." Unfortunately, neither has anything to do with the headline. There was nothing subtle about it. Equally unfortunate is your lack of reading comprehension. I said KU could claim bragging rights in the state. I fail to see how that lacks grace.

The poll at issue asked which team had the best home court in the state. That seems to be inclusive of all teams, but maybe I'm just too ignorant to appreciate the "subtlety." I only ask that WSU get a nod if you're going to make an all-Kansas list.
