  • Bilas Chat at 1 p.m CST on ESPN.com

I suggest that those Shockernetters that are able spam him with WSU/Valley questions so that either:

    a) he actually talks about WSU and the Valley
    b) he tries to talk about WSU and the Valley and demonstrates his extreme ignorance, or
    c) he completely ignores us, thus demonstrating his "east coast bias."

You all will have to excuse me. I'm still fired up after the win over UNI.

I just chose that line because it's a common one. It's more of a "BCS" or "Big Six" bias. It's the same bias that caused Jim Nantz and Billy Packer to look like complete tools on national TV in 2006 when they grilled the head of the NCAA tournament selection committee for putting four Valley schools in. It's the same bias that Gary Williams has when he claims no mid-majors are asking him for games and then hanging up on Barry Hinson the very next day. It's the same bias that keeps bringing up the 'fact' that the NCAA ratings were lower in 2006 whenever anyone asks about mid-majors getting in the NCAA, as if THAT should have any bearing on it (even though we all know it does, thank YOU CBS).

Basically, it boils down to 'you don't s--t where you eat.' Bilas makes his money from ESPN. ESPN makes their money by showing games and highlights from teams with really simple names like "Texas" and "UNC." Moreover, Bilas himself is a former Dukie, so he'll never rag on his old conference.

They can try to hide it all they want, but North Carolina is still a directional school.

That's why I miss Barry Hinson. He was a great supporter of the Valley and it was hilarious when he took on Gary Williams in public like that.. only to see Gary Williams mysteriously disappear with his comments.

Jay, I don't know if you have seen the top teams of the CAA play this year or not, but the league is very good. William and Mary, VCU, ODU have all beaten some big boys out of conference and Mason and Northeastern are coming on strong right now. This conference deserves multiple bids this year. Your thoughts?

              Jay Bilas (2:56 PM)

I would tend to agree that the Colonial has three teams that will be in the mix for an at-large bid. William and Mary (my sister's alma mater), ODU and VCU are all good teams that can beat people. With the Pac-10 down, there are a few extra spots available, and my guess is that mid-majors will benefit this year. There are a bunch of very average majors this year relative to years past, and I think that mid-majors like the three mentioned above and some teams in the Missouri Valley will get better looks because of the relative weakness of some of the major leagues.

For starters, try watching that Bristol, CT network sometime between now and the month of March. It will all play out for you.

Is it East Coast bias, or simply TV ratings bias?

“That was the year [the MVC] got four bids – and it was also the year George Mason made it to the Final Four,” Jankovich said. “Television ratings were lower than usual during the tournament that year. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but ever since that time, the number of at-large bids to non-Big Six schools has gone down and down and down.
