  • Words of Gov. Parkinson

    From The Sunflower:

Mark Parkinson has had to field some pretty tough questions from the media in his short tenure as the governor of Kansas. But, when he was asked recently whom he would root for in the upcoming basketball game between the University of Kansas and Kansas State, he had to choose his words wisely.

“I would hope they'd both be healthy and no one would get hurt, and I really wouldn't care who won," he said. “Then after the game, I hope both of their athletic directors would have the courage to schedule a Wichita State game, and then I'd root for Wichita State."
Wichita State's independent, student-run news source
That rug really tied the room together.

As much as I would like to see annual games between ALL THREE regents D1 programs, consuming the legislature's time on this matter is a waste of public resources, IMO.

With the amount of money we would be keeping in the state by scheduling these games, I do not hintk it is a waste of time at all!

Not to mention the cost savings to all three athletic departments!

True….at least in an ideal world what you write is true.

I long ago lost touch with the legislative comings and goings in Topeka; however, my initial reaction is the public actually might be better served if their representatives were distracted by such a trivial issue. ;-)

Every minute the legislature spends on this issue is one minute they can't spend messing something else up. In looking at the legislature over the last 20 or 30 years, this should have happened 20 or 30 years ago and maybe the state wouldn't be in the mess it's in today.

This is legislation whose time has come.

And I mean that in a most bi-partisan way.

The fans of all three programs seem to be for the games it is just the sports departments at the universities that are standing in the way. I think WSU and KSU will end up playing in the not distant future. The two coaches seem to like each other at least enough to schedule closed scrimmages each other so maybe a series might transpire at some time. We won't play KU until Lew "I saved WSU athletics by making it a laughing stock" Perkins is gone from there.
