  • UNI - an undefeated Valley season?

Found this tidbit off the UNI board, pulled from a Jay Bilas chat transcript:

    Canby (Cedar Falls, IA)

What are your thoughts on Northern Iowa and the Valley?

    Jay Bilas (4:29 PM)

I have Northern Iowa ranked in my Top 25. With Adam Koch, Jordan Egelseder and Kwadzo Ahellegbe, the Panthers have some outstanding players that are experienced and tough. With Wichita State playing better, Missouri State capable under Cuonzo Martin and Southern Illinois and Illinois State very solid, the MVC is again a really tough league. I would be surprised if anyone beats Northern Iowa, though. That is the league's best team.

Even SIU in that season under Painter couldn't escape without a loss (they were 17-0 and lost their final MVC game). And he says that right after saying it's a tough league.

The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that he meant that no one would beat them for the Valley title, not that no one would beat them in any individual game.

I took it this way as well. No person in their right mind would predict any team to go undefeated in a league as tough as the Valley is this year.

+3 - I interpreted it that way also.

As I said before, UNI is a very potent, well-coached, patient, hard-nosed ball club. They will not get rattled by anyone this year, therefore they will not beat themselves. Somebody is going to have to beat them.

They have an intelligence, experience, and toughness advantage over our ball club as it stands now. I would hope by the time we play them, we will be able to narrow the toughness gap.

Oh, and they are tremendously well-coached. How do they get so lucky up there in Cedar Falls?

I wish you liked WSU as much as you like UNI.

Yeah, you may be right. I really didn't consider that angle, but should have.

                    Thanks for the correction!

I do like WSU, very much I might add. When I said, "How do they get so lucky up there in Cedar Falls?", I wasn't necessarily implying that I would trade anything we have for something they have, only that they do a lot with a little. They are a model for mid-majors all across the country.

UNI taking care of business against the Redbirds in Normal so far. They are certainly an excellent, veteran team...and Egelseder is a load. I am shocked at how good he has turned out to be.

I pray that we can get a road sweep next week. That Tuesday night game vs. the Panthers will be rocking regardless, but especially if 1st place is on the line heading into it.

Eggslider is 7'1", just how many 7 footers do you think the MVC has? We will see how good he does against Stutz.

I don't know, he is handling Carmichael and Odiakosa pretty easily. Egleseder isn't afraid to put it on the floor and is pretty decent at it. I don't know how the Shox will even come close to stopping him. It's pretty obvious he's improving quite a bit.

Just being 7 foot doesn't mean anything. Sometimes people put way to much into that number. If I remember right Odiakosa and Carmichael weren't bothered by Stutz a whole lot, but they are definately bothered by Egleseder.
