  • Best FT shooting conference?

Just thought this was interesting. The MVC has to be the best FT shooting conference in the country. Here are the national ranks:

    WSU- 7th
    Indiana St- 10th
    SIU- 11th
    MSU- 23rd
    Drake- 29th
    N. Iowa- 82nd
    Ill. St.- 91st
    Evansville- 132nd
    Bradley- 149th
    Creighton- 169th

Since there are 347 schools, that means every MVC school is better than average, with 5 in the top 29 and 3 in the top 11.

Slight technical detail ... not necessarily better than average, however, all MVC teams are above the median. Yes, the MVC is probably pretty high in the team FT% category.

IMO, FT shooting is a big deal and sometimes even the highest caliber teams suck at it. It always seemed like Roy Williams' KU teams weren't that good at FT shooting and it cost them a few times. Look at sCUm way down there in their rightful place at the bottom of the conferernce. Bradley shot the FTs well vs. the Shocks on Sunday and certainly shot it better than a middling FT shooting team (88%).

The Shocks would not have beaten TTU if not for their near-perfect FT shooting in that game. Making the defense pay for fouling really adds a legitimate dimension to this team.

Suprisingly, Bradley was 15 of 17 (88%) from the line, that's how they kept the game close in the first half.

And it wasn't their good free throw shooter that were making them.

7th in the country? That's pretty amazing, especially considering last year.

            ... No really, deuces.

HCGM and staff deserve some kudos for helping the players getting their FT average up. WSU has been typically a below average FT team until this year.

FT shooting plus our depth on the team are 2 standout things I really like about this team this year. We don't experience letdowns when the subs come in like we have in the past.

Ellis is playing better, like we all knew he could, plus Blair is a very good athletic player who can finish the ball. Durley can flat out take over a game when he has a mind to. His offense is a real plus at times. And Stutz is playing pretty well too.

I wish Kyles would start showing up in EVERY game. He doesn'[t move enough lately around the perimeter, or cutting to the basket. He was a non factor in the Bradley game. He has every bit of the ability to give us 8-12 points a game.

If Calipari's Memphis team could have shot their free throws they could have vacated a national championship. But no, they let KU win.

Also, it should be noted that Clevin Hannah leads the NATION in FT% with 38-40 for 95%

And JT Durley is 97th - 38 of 46 - 82.6% - gotta love a big man that hit his foul shots.

His FT skills have not gone unnoticed - if you read through the Texas Tech game thread on their board someone said "Foul anybody but Hannah". :yahoo:

Who'd have thunk that Ellis and Kyles would be the poorest of those in the "rotation"?

A physician called into a radio show and said:

The sad thing is, as an opposing team you have to foul "anyone outside of about 6 people" in order to feel good about having the Shox at the line. I'm loving our freethrow shooting. It's absolutely a NECESSITY if you want to become a championship quality team.
"He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!
