The problem is not that they lost but the way they lost. They lost their composure and panicked with some of their decisions (shot selection and passes).

Also, the defense did not play well the 2nd half. This has been something we all have been watching and wondering about. I think it is safe to say it is now a trend for this team.
True. We also need to realize that this team is still quite young. One senior who's actually only been in our program for 1 1/2 season is going to mean some inconsistency still. That's not saying Clevin isn't a good leader--he is, but it's safe to say that we still have plenty of growing and maturing to do.

We're much more mature in our decision making than last year, but still a work in progress. As long as we progress and continue to improve over the long haul things will be just fine.

This 'trend' will surely be addressed by HCGM. I think it might be a result of a habit developed after playing weaker compeition. You get ahead in the first half and then you take your foot off of the gas pedal a bit. Granted, we were only ahead by 1 at halftime, but I bet it's a mentality that is hard to break. They'll have to though.

Would you be willing to bet a thousand dollar bill on that proposition?

      • RDR--I could hold the loot but then would I be known as "forever-long-gone-shockerfan?" I keed, I keed. The loss last night was no big deal. Few Valley teams will Normally win at Normal. I picked us 3rd or 4th before the Season started and still feel we could do even better.

I'm willing to put money on this too big mouth.

I actually think after one road loss in a tough environment we're due for 10th.

                • I think Marshall needs to be a little more "disciplined" to TM in regards to when his shots are falling and when they're not. 1-8 shooting in 34 minutes is not good. Add in the two missed FT's at a critical time in the game didn't help. It said TM has only 1 TO but with a lot of his forced, careless, and weird shots, that was just like turning the ball over.

I was waiting for TM to eat some bench, but never did.

The No TM Road Show continues. That is not All-Valley material.

I'm guessing Toure's FG % has dropped to under 30%.

                  • Why does any team 'have to be due' for a bad game? The best teams don't get due for them, or at the least, they work their way around them. I wanted a win last night, or at the very least, a very close loss, but a 15 point loss throws us RIGHT BACK TO LAST YEAR.

Haven't the players learned anything since then? Didn't they learn anything from the 12 games they played before Illinois State. Frankly, HCGM should have reamed their butts for breaking down on defense. Defense is learned, and once learned, should be applied at all times.

Personally, I think too many posters are too generous with 'learning curves' for the team. I mean, when my boss tells me to do something, I do it the FIRST TIME AND EVERYTIME from then on. I don't have to be reminded 100's of times of what he wants. DUH!!! Many of you posters on here act like the players are 'intellectually challenged' or something by the more than gracious learning curve time periods you seem to allow them. Good players and teams make mistakes, but they CORRECT THEM RIGHT AWAY.

All of our poise went out the window last night, this team, apparently, still has a lot of work to do.

And I would like to know something, Why, when Hatch, Murry, or Kyles could not guard Eldridge, didn't HCGM turn to Manigault and say, 'Here's your chance Kenny, go stop Eldridge' seeing how Kenny is kind of a defensive specialist, especially with those long arms of his.

And another apparent fact, Eldridge wasn't scouted and studied enough before the game last night.

                    • I am as disapointed as anyone but it was one loss at a place that few teams will win at this season. TM was a disapointment as stated by several posters...he is supposed to be our star and sometimes I'm not seeing it. Also Ill St is better than I thought, N iowa is apparently for real,as is Mo State...S Ill also ....So I think we will have to play much tougher to be in the mix for a top 4 seed in St Louis.

Links to all fan sites for the Valley are in the 'links' section of this site. Have a look.

It's just one game. Disappointing--you bet! You are entitled to your opinion of course, but remember these guys are young (18-20 year old 'kids' in most cases) student athletes. Scholarship athletes, but still students and basically kids, not adults in a work situation.

With that said, it is up to our coach and the players to LEARN from the mistakes and continue building to get better. There's a LOT of basketball to be played... 16 more games at least. Lots of time to improve and succeed......or of course fail.

We aren't going to win all of our conference games. Illinois State isn't a bad team, and Osiris Eldridge is a very good player that few people could stop with good scouting or any other method. All you can do is limit him somewhat, but he's going to do what he's going to do to an extent.

A 15 point loss is a disappointment for sure. Now, how's the team going to respond? Are they going to hang their heads or take this as a challenge to improve and motivate them? That's the million dollar question.

                              Very astute and accurate.

Stats call it a field goal attempt, but common sense calls it just another turnover.

You do realize that if TM doesn't throw up two of those ugly shots we miss out on a couple of Gabe Blair quality highlight reel additions!!

Maybe TM deserves a couple dimes.
