  • Non-BCS vs BCS

I'm sure I missed a few games here and there, but here goes. I divided non-BCS schools into Tier 1 (Atl-10, C-USA, MVC, MWC, WCC and three recent top teams not in these conf - Siena, Butler, and George Mason) and the rest of the teams into Tier II. In Tier II, I only looked at wins, not losses, by these teams since everyone knows they should only lose to BCS teams. ;-)

    ATL-10: wins - 15 (5 H, 5 N, 5 Rd) 1 ranked team, 4 ranked Opp
    14 tms| loses - 33 (3 H, 17 N, 13 Rd) 0 rkd, 12 rkd Oppnts

    C-USA: wins - 7 (2 H, 5 N, 0 Rd) no ranked teams envolved
    12 tms| loses - 15 (6 H, 3 N, 6 Rd) 0 rkd, 4 rkd Oppnts

    MVC: wins - 8 (4 H, 4 N, 0 Rd) 0 rkd, 2 rkd Oppnts
    10 tms| loses - 9 ( 1 H, 3 N, 5 Rd) 0 rkd, 1 rkd Oppnt

    MWC: wins - 9 (4 H, 5 N, 0 Rd) 0 rkd, 4 rkd Oppnts
    9 tms| loses - 12 (3 H, 3 N, 6 Rd) 1 rkd, 0 rkd Oppnts

    WCC: wins - 12 (3 H, 6 N, 3 Rd) 1 rkd, 0 rkd Oppnts
    8 tms| loses - 12 (2 H, 4 N, 6 Rd) 2 rkd, 3 rkd Oppnts

    Other top: wins 4 (1 H, 1 N, 2 Rd) 2 rkd, 1 rkd Oppnt
    3 tms| loses 7 (0 H, 6 N, 1 Rd) 3 rkd, 5 rkd Oppnts

    SubTotal: wins - 55 ( 19 H, 26 N, 10 Rd) 4 rkd, 11 rkd Oppnts
    56 teams| loses - 88 (15 H, 36 N, 37 Rd) 6 rks, 25 rkd Oppnts

    Tier II Teams: wins - 35 ( 7 H, 8 N, 20 Rd) 0 rkd, 6 rkd Oppnts

Number of BCS games to # of teams in conference:

Other Top: 3 teams, 11 games, 3.67 per team
    ATL-10: 14 teams, 38 games, 3.43 per team
    WCC : 8 teams, 24 games, 3.0 per team
    MWC : 9 teams, 21 games, 2.33 per team
    C-USA: 12 teams, 22 games, 1.83 per team
    MVC : 10 teams, 17 games, 1.70 per team

As a note: Tier I teams had 34 homes games to 47 road games. When you take the ATL-10 out, 26 home and 29 road.

I guess I'm confused but I don't understand the point you are trying to make.

I can't see any conclusions to draw from the numbers presented.

I started this to just see how often non-BCS teams won (or lost as with the Tier I schools).

I found it interesting how different BCS conferences approach who they play in the non-con. The ACC plays very few Tier I teams, while the Big East, located on the same coast, play a lot.

The success ratio different BCS conferences have. Number of home games to road games.

The number of games and success Tier I conferences have. As a note, the ATL-10 will probably get as many or more invites to dance as any other Tier I conference. Yes, this is thanks to the Big East playing them, but the ATL-10 also plays the worst ratio of home games to road games among the Tier I conferences. The ATL-10 also has played 23 games against non-Big East BCS teams from all the BCS conferences. That's about as many or more games than the other Tier I conferences play.

I'm not an advocate of playing a lot of one and done games, but as a conference, the MVC needs to improve its non-con schedule. Whether this is having more teams play in more season tournaments where BCS teams are, or improving their schedule by playing better non-BCS teams.

Geez, a lot of hostility for a lot of hard work. Well done, I enjoyed reading it. 8-9...not too shabby.

You could have missed a few, but I doubt anyone will take the time to research it. Well done.

While I would like to see the MVC play more BCS teams, I think an 8-9 record looks better than a 15-33 record (A-10).

While it may look better, it doesn't seem to have done more for the Valley.

                    ATL-10/Pomroy: 3 teams above 50 RPI, 4 above 100, 4 above 150, and only one below 200 RPI. Overall conference rating - 7

                    ATL-10/Sagarin: 4 above 50, 3 above 100, 4 above 150, 4 above 150, and only one below 165. Overall conference rating - 7

                    ATL-10/Realtime: 4 above 50, 3 above 100, 5 above 150. Overall conference rating - 4.

Once they get full swing into conference play, these good ratings will hold they're positions and work in much the same way BCS conference ratings help them after conference play starts.

I still say they get at least 3, maybe 4, invites to dance.
