2. Found it curious that Stutz came in for TM in the "blood rule" situation, when Hatch was available. Is Stutz really better from the charity stripe? I suppose that he must be, and that is astounding.
Coach Jans said in a post-game show that Stutz stood up and told Coach to put him in because he would make the free throws.
You guys have this all wrong. They changed this rule, I believe last year. The opposing coach must pick the player who will shoot the free throws. This came about after an NCAA game a couple years ago - I can't remember who was involved - but a player was only very questionably injured at a big moment in a game, and that team put in a far better free throw shooter in his place. Bruce even mentioned on the broadcast that the refs went over to confer with Knight. He could have chosen anyone. I believe Knight, being the stand up guy that he is, probably just went ahead and went with the actual replacement off the bench for Murray, but it was his choice, not ours.
Actually, upon further research, the refs really screwed this one up last night. The rule states that the opposing coach must choose from one of the remaining four players on the floor. Stutz shouldn't have even been eligible to shoot those free throws. Here is the link: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?key=/nc...050609ncaanews
Stutz had a really good touch on his freethrows up until that moment, so Gregg was just going with the hot hand.
He made both that he substituted for Murry, so I don't understand the "until that moment". For the season he is shooting 78%; Hatch 80%, not much to choose from.
How is "up until that moment" confusing at all to you?
You have the period in time that precedes the moment where Gregg elected to have Stutz shoot Toure's free throws. In that period of time, Stutz was stroking his free throws. Ergo, up until that moment, Stutz was a hot hand. Gregg did not have the foresight to know what would happen after that moment, therefore he could only consider what happened until that moment.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Seems to me that there was an exception to this rule for the case that a player is forced out of the game by the officials because of blood, which was the case last night.

That NCAA.org sight I quoted doesn't mention anything about a 'blood exception'. The only exceptions is lists are flagrant or intentional fouls.
I'm guessing there's an exception for blood. The rule is there to prevent a poor shooter from faking an injury and being replaced by a much better shooter. In the case of blood, you can't fake that and have to leave. I'm guessing that's why Marshall was able to pick someone off the bench. I think Pat was asking about it as well as there was an official down talking to him during that period.

I am guessing you are correct. I guess being 'injured' and being 'bloody' aren't necessarily the same thing. A bloodied player must be subbed for immediately, and Murray just happened to be shooting free throws at the time of his 'blood sub'.
After Stutz was inserted into the game and Stutz was walking toward the free throw line, Coach Marshall tried to get Graham Hatch into the game. However, it was too late to substitute into the game.
At the time, I thought that perhaps Coach Marshall had changed his mind and wanted Graham to shoot the FTs.
So, Graham stayed at the scorer's table, while Garrett shot the FT. (Yes, Doctor, I know I owe you $$$$$$$$.)
All's well, which ends well.

Ricky - - - "David plays smarter. PJ could be a turnover machine at times."
Pretty sure DK's two consecutive, quick fouls (and the resulting 6 points) with under a minute were what kept TT in the game. Not heady ball, especially if you had been paying attention to their PG's style of play.
PJ could be a turnover machine but he was also very good at anticipating on D. I wouldn't give the basketball IQ nod to DK at this point. I must say that DK's basketball savvy has improved greatly since last year [especially his shot selection]; however, the only thing you absolutely CANNOT do in that situation was foul. DK did it twice.
The good news is that DK will get to watch the tape with HCGM and both will undoubtedly make sure it doesn't happen again.

...has 2 1/2 more years to go. We're comparing him to a 5th year senior.
