Since the topic is already open... the WSJ had a story today making the case for 96 teams. Doug Elgin weighed in with his support for the idea. I'm not sure I can concur, even though it would likely benefit us this year.
Coach K from Duke is in favor of it now. This might actually be picking up steam among the coaches. And when coaches like him speak out about something, others tend to listen.
But if it would get the Valley 2 to 4 teams in the dance every year, rather than the 1 bid confernce we have been the last couple of years, then it might be a good thing for us.
It certainly doesn't excite me very much, but it has been a long time since the last big expansion (53 to 64 teams, I don't count the move from 64 to 65). And there are a lot more teams in division 1 basketball then there was back then. :wsu_posters:
What I'd like to see first is adding 7 bids so that there are 8 play-in round games. Have those games scheduled before Selection Sunday (since they'll be from the bottom conferences who's tournaments should all be done before then) to be played either Tuesday or Wednesday at the locations where the 1-2 seeds are and have those games televised on CBS. That would give the play-in round more of a tournament feel.
At the same time, pare the number of D1 teams down to 300 or so.

I'd just like to see it go down to about 200 and move it back to 64 berths. That would more than take care of the watered down problem.
