In my opinion, I think TX-Southern was playing some pretty lame post defense. They'd allow the catch pretty close to the basket, and JT and Stutz would easily get close to the basket. Then at least 2 guys would attempt to block their attempts. And we never seemed to get a foul called. But it certainly wasn't just Stutz getting that treatment in the post.

But what I noticed was that they never stripped Stutz on the way to the basket. That shows that his strength is greatly improved, and he's focused on maintaining control of the ball. Now over the next year he can work on his leg strength, so that even when more athletic guys try to block his dunk, he just powers through them for the jam.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

I'm too young to remember Greg Dreiling when he wasn't riding the pine for the Mavericks...Are Greg and Stutz similar players?

Other than being 7' white guys....not really. IIRC, Greg was bigger than Stutz. Stutz has a nice outside shot while Drieling was a true post player. It appears to me that Stutz is still learning the post.

Garret will be great but having another advantage with the outside shooting ability.

I forgot to mention -Stutz with ZERO turnovers!

In a nutshell: Stutz has shown continued effectiveness four games in a row and his scoring efficiency (in regards to how long he was on the floor) last night was off the charts. He didn't turn the ball over once and he was getting absolutely abused at times by some big boys. Mike Kennedy described him having his elbow even with the rim when he went for his tip-in early in the game.

I can't remember ever seeing such a transformation in a Shocker player that had previously been so ineffective. All we had was hope and a promise with hardly a glimmer of reality. If he continues to improve at this pace, the sky is the limit.

Someone said earlier in the year that if he had gone to Kentucky he would be playing DII this year. Perhaps all the overtures Kentucky made at the final hour trying to convince Stutz to be a Wildcat instead of a Shocker are now being justified. Paul Miller certainly justified his offer from OU by the time he graduated. If only Stutz would have redshirted last year...

                  I believe.

Garrett only had 7 minutes in the first half. I was quite surprised.

I thought he was effective and he only had one foul. Maybe Coach Marshall saw otherwise.

I am not quite sure what Coach Marshall had in mind.

                    Comments are welcome.

He had fewer minutes this game because JT was more effective. As long as JT was not fouling and still defending & scoring, HCGM was going to keep him out on the court.

A couple have inferred that the team we played last night was weak.

Coach said after the game that this Texas team had several players that he would have been happy to have on our team. He described them coming out of the locker room as looking bigger than us. Also, during a commercial break, Mike and Dave could be heard talking to each other about how impressed they were with the beating we were putting on a Texas Southern team that will, and I quote, "beat Alcorn St. by 30 as well".

I believe coach also said in the post-game that if there was a better team than Texas Southern in their conference, he didn't want to play them. Texas Southern does seem to have some very outstanding players. I think what they lack is chemistry and a well-executed offensive system. If not for our stifling defense, they could have been a much bigger threat. To have our defense working at this high of a level, this early in the season, is very reassuring when dreaming of big things THIS year.

On another note: Did anybody know that Steve McNair went to Alcorn St.?

"Sept. 19, 1992 – Alcorn defeats Alabama State 32-7 in the first game at Jack Spinks Stadium, the school’s new, state-of-the-art football stadium. Alcorn won its first 13 games in the new facility.

November 1994 – Quarterback Steve McNair sets the NCAA record for career total offense. He finished the season with 57 touchdown passes, while also finishing third in balloting for the Heisman Trophy and being drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft."

Coach said in the post-game that his biggest problem now is spreading the minutes across a group of players that all deserve to play as much as everybody else. He said that when he brings his bench in to relieve the starters, he doesn't want to pull them out quickly because they deserve to keep playing. There is a very good chance that throughout this year we may literally have two first-string lines. What a great problem to have. Competition during practice must be brutal!

So far, GS is making me eat my words, which I LOVE. I feel more and more comfortable with each game that he's in here.

Granted, the competition hasn't been the stiffest in his "big" games, but he's doing a helluva lot better than this time last year, which is all that we can ask and hope for.

Here's to the continued success of Garrett.. and I hope he carries this over into the TCU/Tech games, as well as the Valley too.

With the 7'3" Schneiders coming into town on Saturday, I think GS's minutes will increase--with maybe his first start of the year.
