I saw a question asked about this on the blog with paul this afternoon and began wondering about their salaries. I believe its important for the top dog to be properly compensated but I also believe its vital to any program the assistants are also compensated well. It is the asst coaches that has the responsibility for recruiting in particular areas. If you lose one you have to replace him with someone familiar with the area or have contacts in a totally new area. If a head coach is always having to find a replacement he has less time to do what he needs to do. Recruiting takes a hit in a big way most of the time when an asst moves on. You see some of these asst coaches at some of these schools (nc for one), that basicly stay forever. It would be nice to be able to pay these guys an amount that if they were offered a head coaching job (Boyle to UNC) that they would have to take a pay cut to leave. Just thinking that its better to pay a little more up front than to suffer later on.

I agree with your overall thoughts...But in the case of Boyle, that wasn't a factor. Tad wanted his own program really bad and hit a time in his career he thought it needed to happen. UNC is located in his hometown. It was a chance for Tad to cut his teeth as the guy in charge at home surrounded by friends and family. If I remember correctly, Tad took a small financial cut on the jump.
