  • what's with the music?

Shockband...I'm hearing a lot of recorded music during timeouts on the radio. And I know you're not playing in there but, how's the band doing? We had a lot of attendance issues my year of running it.

They're doing OK, but they don't get a lot of space to play. They get little opportunity to play at called timeouts (none for the short TOs) and only at some of the media timeouts. But there are tons of promos going on getting in the way of that. Little opportunity at halftime as well. They'll play a few tunes before the game, fight songs and Dudley at the usual times, and maybe one tune after the game.

I have a whole list of songs I'd love to hear the band bust out if the powers-that-be would just put away the mid-90's NBA crap for a while.

I like the music, but the band is better.

And frankly, imho, there is no reason to play "jump around" if nobody will, you know, jump around.....seems kinda pointless.

Now a lot of people will get funky, and that's ok.

Sadly that tradition was lost somewhere in the late 90's or early 2000's I think. That used to be fun.

Agreed, but would I be the only one to say that the pep band has taken a step backwards this year, in execution? It just doesn't seem to be the same great band as in years past, but I fully admit I have zero skill here, I only know what I like.

Maybe we should bring it back... that or Happy Trails.

One difference the past couple years is the fact it is all currently enrolled students now I believe. It used to be that there were several grisly veterans playing (myself included up until the early 2000s) that had YEARS of experience and were terrific players. This was especially true in the trumpet section.
Makes a big difference - while I was a pretty darn good player while in college, I was much better later on.

Part of it might also be the fact that little chance to play = less desire to be a really tight group.

and what happened to all the old music, and why aren't alum allowed to play in the band anymore?

While I wish they would have kept a few certain old warhorse tunes, the book was certainly due for some refreshing. As for why no alums, no idea, other than it is funded with the intent of being a student activity.

Yeah, I think you and I played in the pep band sometime in the 90s. I can think of one really good player in the tpt section that played for years and know exactly what you're saying.

With that said, I think Mickey should come back. It was fun. I don't know if the current director would be open to it or not though.
