  • Why the NCAA system does not, and never will, work

While not basketball, this is semi-Shocker related, as we have been lamenting the lack of good non-conference basketball opponents for as long as I can remember. I have said before that it makes me sick that in football teams like Kansas can pay as much in guarantees as they spend funding their entire program. I think this takes it to a new level:

Because the culture of college athletics has been allowed to descend to the point that there is a "major conference" mafia that makes a concerted effort to exclude all comers, it's difficult to imagine the day that WSU is nationally competitive as long as it remains in the MVC.

Just food for thought. I realize this happens all the time, but I have not yet seen it in such a high profile way.

One of the ESPN radio heads was lamenting how boring the football season was this year because Boise, Cincinnati, etc. were ruining it.

Paraphrasing, "all people care about seeing are major teams. The worst case scenario is that one of these teams would get to play for the national championship."

And folks like me think it's the only reason college football is worth watching this year.

I seem to remember the year that WSU, Bradley, and George Mason made the Sweet 16 the talking heads were crying doomsday at the prospect of three "mid-majors" making the final four.

Looks like the BCS is going to prove again this year that it sucks. Probably there will be 4 and maybe 5 undefeated teams with Florida/Alabama winner, Texas, TCU, Boise St, and maybe Cincy.

TCU maybe the best team of them all from what I've seen. You can't prove to me otherwise unless they play.

Playoffs - Bring them ON !!!

I was listening to one of the sports shows yesterday and the host just wanted to remind everyone that bowl games are not intended to be a playoff system but to make MONEY for the bowl sponsors. That is why the Notre Dames and USCs will be invited to bcs bowls over TCU, BSU, and Cincinnati. Its all about the Money. They have large followings and for the most part travel to these venues. I wish it weren't so but.......

Two: Great quote "'major conference" mafia that makes a concerted effort to exclude all comers:"

The "other" (not mid and lower) conferences should come up with a buzzword like "apartheid" to constantly remind the NCAA and the fans of the BCS how the deck is stacked.....

I don't watch a lot of college football. Actually haven't watched a game all season. But if Boise or TCU were playing for the NC I would definitely watch. If it's two BcS schools I'll ignore it like I have every other game.

I agree. College football is too messed up for me to care about it. I don't bother.

Me too. They're losing to all the teams they can't buy off for easy wins. Love it.
