  • BA's MINK Prospects

I saw where it was posted that him dropping basketball was a false rumor but thought I'd post this anyway:

    5. Johnny Coy, 3b/1b, St. Joseph (So., Wichita State)

Coy was drafted by the Phillies in the seventh round in 2008 and was their highest draft pick that went unsigned. Coy starred in basketball and baseball in high school and chose to attend Arizona State to play both sports. After one semester, he had a change of heart and decided to transfer to Wichita State and play solely baseball. Transfer rules required him to sit out last spring, but he had a good summer in the MINK League, batting .299/.331/.394 with three homers and seven walks and 30 strikeouts in 137 at-bats. Coy has a massive 6-foot-8, 210-pound frame and has plenty of room to further fill out his upper body. Scouts say Coy has above-average to well above-average raw power, but it hasn't shown up in games yet. He has an impatient approach at the plate, and his poor plate discipline impacts his hitting and power tools. Coy runs well for his size and stole 10 bases for St. Joseph's. He has good hands at the hot corner, but he may have to shift across the diamond if he outgrows the position. Now that Coy has dropped basketball, he can focus on managing the strike zone better. His ability to recognize balls and strikes will make or break his career, but his ceiling is high.

As has previously been stated, Coy has confirmed that he has never said he isn't playing basketball at WSU and that he fully intends to play both sports, despite what this journalist has decided to print. Not sure where they got their "facts".

not sure if i have any bearing on this but Coy's facebook says "what a day" and the replies were asking if the rumors were true. also looked on his info and in the activities all it says is wsu baseball. that only leads me to believe that he will not play basketball this year. could be wrong but thats my thought. That would be a waste of scholly if its true

            Coy

Go to the Go Shockers website, click on basketball, & then click on the roster. You will see Johnny Coy's bio there. His scholarship is for basketball, not baseball. Further, Paul Sullentroop had quite a bit to say about the same subject in his Shockwaves column within the past several days & confirmed Coy will be out for basketball now. Paul said that Coy showed up with a case of Strep throat, so his training would be delayed until he recovered from it.

If he weren't going to play basketball he wouldn't be getting the 'ship. Keep reading between the lines and being wrong. Sully talked directly with Coy. I'll trust him over what you interpret online

Like subgod said...he wouldn't be able to keep his scholly. I guess unless he is gonna drop WSU basketball to WALK-ON to the baseball team.

Not sure I follow why he wouldn't get his scholarship? He could "be on the team" and receive a scholarship and never dress for a game right? If GM agreed to it is there any reason it couldn't happen that way?

I am not saying I think this is the case, just asking the question.

Looks like we freed up a scholly...

I would have loved to see what the kid could do on the basketball floor, but I'm also excited to have another scholarship to give for 2010.

This is why you never stop recruiting even tho we didnt have a scholly available for 2010.

I hate to say it, but this seems like it was inevitable.....fortunately, I believe this is a "mistake" that will not cost us much.

Lesson #1: If your child is going to play sports, make sure they cancel their social networking accounts.

Lesson #2: Never allow yourself to think for one minute that competing at the D1 level is anything but extremely hard.

Lesson #3: 17-23 year olds are children....more so than ever before.

                              Lesson #4: Creighton sucks.

Johnny, and I mean this 100% sincerely, I wish you the very best of luck in your baseball endeavors. Knock 'em dead!
